Here's my newest "brains are weird" thing: I am writing more often & more easily now that I'm not trying to send any posts by email or add pictures or make them interesting.
And the posts are more interesting too, at least to me.
Go figure.
Anyway, here's the latest on life, writing and so on.

My front yard is almost ready for #SpookySeason!nI;ll add some chalk sidewalk drawings tomorrow, but the hard work’s done.
Bonus of decorating on a dry, warm day for once: it was nice enough to start on autumn cleanup, bundling brush from the shrubs we’re trying to kill & dividing the spent perennials between compost-in-place & adding to the pollinator nursery in the backyard.

I hate it when I want to support a small business but their website is so janky I not only end up swearing at the screen but ALSO can't even get it to accept payment in the end.
Sorry, MyPlayingCards.com, I tried to give you money, but your checkut process suuuuucked.
Here's hoping their customer support is better than their checkout desgn. Zero phone support & 3-5 BUSINESS days for reply to my ticket are bad signs, but hey. At least they did not inflict a freaking chatbot on me.

Krypto was almost the best thing about the Supergirl movie.
Both the actress who played Supergirl & the e who played the plot’s mostly sidelined main character did a great job with the script they were given, but—yeah.
So very tired of movie & book characters doing heinous things & still being given the mantle of hero” because they’re the protagonist.
Hero-washing will never fail to creep me out.

2026-09-18 02:27:48 UTC

I watched Supergirl tonight. Wanted to like it, but it was like a bad Star Wars clone w/ Supergirl & gratuitous violence grafted on.
Somebody needs to explain to Hollywood that onscreen urination & vomiting, fistfights, & torture threats aren’t the clever shorthand for “this setting is gritty & our protagonist is tough!” they think it is.
It’s tired. So are underlit, literally gritty set designs, & villains who would be over the top in a fucking Mad Max movie.

Okay, so here’s a silly q for the hive mind:
I have inherited a 10x10x15cm wooden box FULL of glass marbles—the old-fashioned “play marbles” kind. Aggies, swirls, ribbon swirls, cats-eyes, solids, clears, you name it.
I need creative ideas for using them. I don’t want to leave them in a box when they’re so shiny and pretty but I have no clue what to do with them.
They’re consisent in size so I assume machine-made/modern, but they’re COOL. They even SOUND neat.

Our assessed property value went up 40% this past year. Fair & still below market, big bc assessments were frozen since 2020)
Despite that, property TAX only went up by 25%--& that's w/a many things funded after years of stagnation. As I am a fan of libraries, schools, hospitals etc, I am glad to pay.
That's the bargain I made when I bought property where “taxing people who can afford to own” is how services get funded. (whether that's good or bad is a different rant)

Anyone here in the fediverse have an idea what this tool is used for? It was found in a tool kit with recognizable metal clamps of various styles, gappers, radius gauges ?) metal files, pliers, and 4” metal rulers.
I’m intrigued by its range of numbers & precision clamping capability and wondering why one would need to fine tune a clamp.

#ScribesAndMakers 17 Aug: to what extent do you think art can promote social change?
To the Nth degree. To infinity and beyond.
That’s what art *does.*
Even art that was in no way consciously created to promote a societal view can’t helpdoing so. What messages a creation promotes, and whether promoting it is “good?” Those are different issues.

#writersCoffeeClub 15 Aug: what’s something you recently learned about your own work?
According to comments from a recent reader, my Rollover Files series "examines the concept of superpowers through the lens of disability and aging, focusing on intersectionality, respect, and acceptance."
Which, yeah. That's a totally valid take. I'd just never thought about it quite like that.
I kinda like it, tho. Makes it sound all literary n shit.

I've been itching to take the one book I still have in Kindle Unlimited out to sell on my own site for some time, but I never bothered bc no one ever read it anyway.
Today I got one step closer by creating a shiny retro-style cover to replace the awful one it has now. I made it all by myself, and it probably shows, but I kinda love it.
If you hate it, don't tell me, but if you love it too, lemmee know. :)

I don't usually offer to beta read, because I have a hard time reading to a schedule and hate book reports, but I've been hearing about the plot of this book my friend wrote since she started it, and I loved the concept, so I gave it a try.
I just finished,, and damn I hope this space opera gets picked up by A Major Pub and heavily marketed so the whole world learns it exists.
It is incredibly good and would make a super fun TV series too.

Hi, Fediverse hivemind! I'm seeking recommendations for an e-ink ereader other than a Kindle.
I need a lightweight waterproof e-ink device that I can load with epubs. In a perfect world, it would support kindle, kobo & bookshop.org apps for direct reading of my existing library. (I use but don't love Calibre)
Anyone have an eink ereader they love?
Kobo? Pocketbook? Boox? Bigme? Does it support multiple sources of books? Am I dreaming?
Boosts welcomed.

#WritersCoffeeClub 12/21 Do your story ideas come fully formed, or do you have to develop them?
A core idea comes to fully formed, usually in the form of a scene or scenes involving the major characters doing something. Weaving together a plot that gets me to that point, and carving out what comes *after* for it.--that's development.

Oh, oh, there's no proper reading order, you aren't messed up at all! A surprising number of folks read Weaving first -- it's definitely the most accessible of the books.
And NGL, Felicity is my all-time favorite character to write because she's so down to earth and kind but also absolutely tolerates no shit from anyone. (Plus she loves retail like me, which is a weird trait not many people share.)

Those folks have been living in my brain for years, and I love them all (special shoutout to poor, prickly Justin) so I am over the moon when they make new friends.
How many year? 30+ in the case of Carl & Eddie, who've come a long way since their first incarnations in the horrible post-alien invasion zombie novel I wrote in 1988.

#WritersCoffeeClub 28 Aug: What's the highest praise you've received as a writer?
I am such a sponge for affirmation that I cannot rank praise. I melt into a flustered puddle of happiness at any sincere compliment.
Sadly* I get a lot more "I read your book. It was really well-written."
*Sad bc I have learned that is code for "...but I didn't actually like it" because that statement is usually followed by an awkward change of subject to fend off any potential followup questions from me.

Yowch.
Yeah, the closer the material is to the original, the more critical the need for acknowledgement.

2025-06-10 21:27:21 UTC

#WritersCoffeeClub 10 June: What is the line between homage and theft?
Consent and honesty.
If a creator tries to hide or lies about using someone else's material in prt or whole, it's theft. If they fail to attribute, it's theft.
That said, it is possible to reuse, remix, and/or refer to someone else's work *without knowing its source.* Simultaneous creation does happen, and plagiarism is a squishy, modern capitalist concept.
Honesty and consent.

But I love it when teens and adults ask wistfully if they might have one too.

TY! It was a scary-big heavy spring.
My nerves are still twitching and will stay that way until at least one car isn't trapped any more, but fingers crossed it won't be much longer.

2025-05-16 20:13:25 UTC

Nothing like the garage door losing 1 spring in a spectacular breakage event to liven up life.
bad news:
1. 400 lb door trapping car needed for work.
2. ASAP repair=MEGA expensive.
good news:
1. emergency repair call is in.
2. backup plan of "local friends come help lift after work" if #1 fails.
3. no people or cars were harmed when the head of the spring snapped, and the whole stretched spring went *SPRONG* and dropped off the door track.

It's only a kind of guesswork, really. can only see how many pages are read on a given day. If I got a lot of readers ar the same time all I could do would be to estimate how many people completed a book by dividing page counts.
But since I get very few readers at a time, whenI look at 16 pages read I usually conclude it's one person not continuing after reading.

2025-03-16 22:33:03 UTC

A few years ago I made a "boxed set" ebook of my hopepunk Restoration series & tossed it into Kindle Unlimited just to see what would happen. (the ebooks are distributed wide, & I had ISBNs to burn.)
It mostly just sits there unnoticed like all my books. Sometimes, tho, a reader gets 15-20 pages in, hits the first progressive stuff & nopes out.
That makes me a little sad, but it's for the best bc if they continued they would be far more disappointed later.
Been thinking about that lately.

I have lots of lists of folks I follow, and I read my local feed, but haven't followed many folks on my own server, because I see them anyway.
I've been getting some feedback that this is not how most people take in posts, so I'm curious.

Whenever I log in here and start scrolling, I end up just wanting to boost other people's books & talk about ones I've read & liked.
But I prolly oughta at least mention my own, huh?

It's also a "Yo, self, take yer danged allergy and pain meds, why doncha?" kind of day.
I probably would've done more with my morning if I'd realized that sooner, but tbh it's easy for symptoms to creep up on me during "pollen an pressure changes" season.
Ah, well. I'm up and moving now, the laptop is open, and music is making me happy. All those are little victories.

I don't know why I associate specific musical artists with particular types of weather, but I do.
#Today it's warm but gloomy, with sporadic drizzle and an unsteady wind bouncing water droplets off the windows every now and again.
So anyway, this is a Jethro Tull & classic Pink Floyd kind of day.

First Goodreads review in a very long time for Sharp Edge Of Yesterday, and y'all, they said it was "an unexpected joy to read," and thanked me for signing the copy they got 18 months ago at a convention.
Talk about a huge confidence boost.
So anyway, just wanted to share that bright spark of writer happiness.

Yes, you have it exactly! 😁
Weaving is basically two after-the-end-of-the-main-plot stories, one for each novel, but together they make a nice singular storyline for Felicity.
So the title is a total pun, suggested by same the knitter friend who wanted poor Carl to get his own HEA & gave me the story inspiration.
