A friend gave me an Armourlite Isobrite Valor Series ISO403 Swiss Made T100 Tritium Illuminated #Chronograph, https://www.armourlite.com/iso403 , which is a tough, durable watch appropriate for #sailing, though not racing.
Naturally, I found a way to shock it badly enough that the chronograph hand became misaligned 🤦‍♂️
So, for those of you who have one, here's how to reset the hand: https://www.armourlite.com/instructions-for-chronograph-watches

Well, Paperless-NGX keeps the original documents in their original format in a separate directory, and only keeps meta-data in the database, but it was still a pain to have to use the old set-up to export the data to a back-up and then go back to the new setup to import it.
The good thing is that NixOS makes that sort of thing trivial, but the obvious trivial way didn't work due to weird version issues, so I had to go for a slightly non-obvious way that may not have worked.

So, I rolled back to the previous generation, but the upgrade used a newer Redis version and changed the db storage format, so the older version could not read it, and paperless would not fully start 🤬
Solution:
1. Reboot to latest generation,
2. Removed the option in situ,
3. `nixos-rebuild test`
4. `paperless-manage document_exporter export`
5. Reboot to latest generation,
6. `paperless-manage document_importer export`
7. Login to see all documents 😬
8. restore configuration.nix

#PaperlessNGX on #NixOS crisis averted. 😎
An accidental update from SQLite to PostgreSQL looked like it lost all my documents 😱
`nixos rebuild switch` was not behaving consistently and a build where I had added the `database.createLocally = true;` was added after a successful build, so it didn't actually run PostgreSQL. In desperation, I did an overdue upgrade to NixOS 25.11 and it worked, but I had dozens of documents loaded and when it rebuilt, it found and used that new option...

the movie [How to Get Ahead in Advertising](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/How_to_Get_Ahead_in_Advertising) actually had a plot point where the protagonist promoted acne as the new chique so the pimple cream company he was working for could swoop in when the fad faded and boost sales.

It also makes me worry about things like #Concast's automatic sharing of access points with the xfinitywifi SID. So anybody wondering by with an #XFinity account can use your AP. One would hope they secure it well enough that this is case wouldn't be vulnerable to Kimwolf🤞

this is why @npub1fdr…lvhs is writhing articles about "Reverse Centaurs". It wasn't until I saw the image in this article, https://pluralistic.net/2025/09/11/vulgar-thatcherism/#there-is-an-alternative , that the meme really stuck in my head though 🤣

I whole heartedly agree!
On the other hand, I have also been thinking about using a service like https://ground.news/ that aggregates similar articles and organizes them by political bias, ownership and factuality (sic), with the hope that one might actually be able to get at some sense of the truth.

there's a fascinating short story from @npub12cu…d38p on this topic. It's not exactly prophetic, but it I'm pretty sure it was written before the current boom in LLMs.
I'll try to remember to look it up when I get home.

For anybody other than weather nerds that is not compelling. Wikipedia and NWS don't do much better.
So here's my attempt...
Wet bulb temperature is measured with a thermometer covered in a wet cloth, so it works like a person who can sweat. In dry conditions, evaporative cooling is operative, when humid, it doesn't help. So if the WBT is above body temperature a person can't cool by sweating and will die without active cooling. WBGT is a slightly fancier more accurate version.

the real problem is getting the idea into the hands of those who could actually implement it. It's one thing to post on social media and blogs, but do negotiators and (prime) ministers even know it's an option to consider?

Kite-Boat https://www.kite-boat.com/en/
I've been toying with the crazy idea buying a boat big enough to live on and #Sailing to my parent's place in the summers to help out, but the journey is crazy long and the last part would be in the The Intracoastal Waterway (#ICW). The boat I'm thinking of has a 60 foot mast that requires a crane to unstep, and would require hundreds of miles of motoring. Maybe this commercial #Kite system would allow sailing between the bridges and locks? No pricing shown 😏

Actually light weight is one of the down sides. I really liked the heft of the stone pen. It was stone aggregate bound with resin over a brass core that was hand turned on a lathe, which made it fairly weighty, which I really liked.
However my Rotring 600 is fairly light too, and it's has a good writing feel. I'm hoping that since the Hexo is wider it might have slightly more heft that the Rotring, and with the low price-point, it's not much of a risk.

I lost my hand made black stone #FountainPen. I knew I should fix that hole in my pocket 🤦‍♂️
I've revived my old Rotring 600 fountain pen, which works fine, but is a little skinny for my taste, but I do like the hexagonal metal body.
I'm thinking the Faber-Castell Hexo Fountain Pen https://www.penaddict.com/blog/2020/9/23/faber-castell-hexo-fountain-pen-review might make a good replacement.

I did check Android and Other because I use #GraphenOS, which _is_ an Android variant, but I also use #NixOS, which in not really a Linux or UNIX variant. It does have a Linux like feel, but is not POSIX compliant at all, though mostly because it does not follow the File Hierarchy Standard.

has anyone tried writing a Fediverse client that included client side algorithms?
I wouldn't mind the addition of a few simple things like deduplication or regex filters, and in pretty sure those could be handled on the client.

I have high hopes for #SnowflakeOS https://snowflakeos.org/ which looks very promising. Having an actual Software Store style UI for adding packages, and a configuration editor could help make it much more accessible and maybe ease some of your maintenance burden. I'm really hoping that their work makes it back upstream to core #nixos

I haven't tried it, but Read You (A modern and elegant RSS reader with Material You design) https://f-droid.org/packages/me.ash.reader/ claims Fever compatibility.
and commafeed is in #NixOSPackages https://search.nixos.org/packages?channel=24.05&show=services.commafeed.enable&query=commafeed
So I'll put both on my to-try list. I'm tired of #Feedly and #gReader Pro, which has become difficult to install on my #GrapheneOS so that it recognizes my license.

I was going to write something about all of Ursula K LeGuin's books being #DRM encumbered, but was pleasantly surprised to discover that _some_ of them are #DRMFree https://www.ebooks.com/en-us/searchapp/searchresults.net?term=Ursula%20K%20LeGuin&Filter.DrmFree=True
Also the books on her official site https://www.ursulakleguin.com/novels-and-collections often link to https://libro.fm/search?q=Ursula+K.+Le+Guin&searchby=authors
