In what kind of world can these go hand in hand!?

Just received a very nasty phishing mail related to the Booking.com data breach reported in the press, e.g. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cly00jnnxypo The professionally looking email purports to be sent by a rental property we stayed at early this year. It states that we were overcharged for our stay and includes a QR code, which has to be scanned to get money back. I assume (but did not try) the QR code leads to a page where credit card information can be entered to claim reimbursement.

Here’s hoping journalists in the US are doing the same 👇

Researchers spend significant amounts of time to add non-traditional contributions (e.g. radio interview, blogpost) to their institutional research information management system. With colleagues at SURF, @nprofile…dphr and I devised a Mastodon-based approach to automate that tedious job for Dutch researchers. And, based on lessons learned, we wrote a blueprint to encourage others to make the same functionality available to their communities. See https://communities.surf.nl/regie-op-data/artikel/in-an-era-where-research-evaluation-methods-are-evolving-the-research and https://claimnetwork.info/

Here's a way in which Austria walks the sustainability talk: They offer a Geräte-Retter-Prämie (appliance-rescue-bonus) when one has an older appliance fixed instead of replaced. That's a government-provided refund of up to 130 euro for a repair. Our 12-year old dishwasher was just repaired for ~350 euros. The repair man told me about the refund option. And I just submitted the request online; easy-peasy. Having lived in the US for 20+ years, I can only be amazed ...

I want to take a moment, here, to highlight the very short yet utterly to-the-point blog post by my long time hero, David Rosenthal, in which he explains to his old boss, Eric Schmidt, why he and his ilk are getting booed at college commencements, and why laws against data centers are getting passed. I’m thinking that it would be constructive if David’s perspective could get some broader attention https://blog.dshr.org/2026/05/ais-pr-problem.html

The defense of @nprofile…dphr PhD thesis “Scholarly Communication Using the Decentralized Web” at Ghent University was a total blast. Obviously because of the mere quality of the presented research. But also because, for the first time in over 20 years, it reunited the 4 Belgians who worked together at the Los Alamos National Laboratory http://hdl.handle.net/1854/LU-01KJQ133EV7095YNBDARB6QNJ8

In the past few months, I’ve had at least 3 people tell me they considered me to be an anarchist. I’ve never seen myself that way, not even remotely. But I assume it’s a sign of the times that spending a career trying to improve access to information is now considered anarchism.

If the analysis I’ve been reading over the past two days is correct, then the leverage the EU has in the tariff debacle is their extensive use of US services, many of them IT related. Which makes me wonder whether/when the EU is going to start considering a strategy similar to what @nprofile…qz4x laid out for a Canadian countermeasure: stop abiding to Intellectual Property laws imposed by the US https://doctorow.medium.com/canada-shouldnt-retaliate-with-us-tariffs-a0e32042fec8

If there’s one lesson we learned in the past 3 months, it’s that the judiciary has to work way faster and way more decisively. While it still can. The processing speed should be like there’s no tomorrow because … there might not be a tomorrow for the judiciary.

I am wondering what all the “Open Infrastructure” aficionados are doing while #scholcomm repositories around the world are struggling to keep their doors open as omnivorous AI Bots are hammering their sites. Writing another Principles document named after a city where it’s nice to have a meeting, maybe?

How #enshittification can it get. While watching the Euro soccer championship in our hotel room, the Android “smart TV” decided to interrupt our experience not once but twice. Because them software upgrades needed installing. Which obviously could not wait until the TV was turned off. So, twice we missed 10 minutes of the game. At which point I decided to start watching on my iPad.
