Europe only _thinks_ it leads the world in regulation. USB phone charging? Chinese regulation. Mandatory labeling of AI content? Chinese regulation. Two-hour fire safety of EV batteries? Chinese regulation. Mandatory close-button on online ads? Chinese regulation. Three-hour-per-week gaming cap for minors? Chinese regulation.
Now, China has the only regulator willing to take on Tesla on its door-handles, and it just won the largest automotive recall the world has ever seen:

I made progress today on the web-cam I've been setting up on my terrace. Here's the first three hours' output. I haven't yet started the putting-them-up-online-automatically phase of the project. I'm planning to do each day as a 15-second movie, and also twenty-four 15-second movies which show the course of the year, one frame per day, each frame from the same hour of the day. So, a fifteen-second movie of all of the noons of the year, for instance.

Renault offers 15% retail cost cut in exchange for 10-15 year moratorium on safety requirements. Not sure what to think about that. Do we already have too many automobile safety requirements? I don't think anyone would argue that car prices are high now...but too high? And is this risk/reward sufficient?

It's interesting that, as DNS has become a more and more specialized discipline, governments and banks and some large enterprise recognize this, and respond by either building the necessary expertise internally, or contracting for that expertise... yet a lot of the largest tech companies just keep blundering forward like it's 1999.

I agree with @npub1vq8…cdzl, this is a situation where it's better to think pragmatically about the long-term, and choose the technologically correct solution, rather than compromising in the short term, and choosing Mr. Right Now, when Mr. Right Now is a for-profit walled-garden owned by someone else, whose purpose is to monetize your users.
Don't sell your users out. There's absolutely nothing you've mentioned that you want to do, for which XMPP isn't already the best technological solution. As well as the best moral solution.

Might I suggest that you implement it as a Framework motherboard? That way we could all just swap it in to our RISC-V laptops when we want, and you don't have to figure out all the laptop-structure tricky bits.

Correct. Got a "Signal wants to update itself, click to reload" message, clicked, authenticated, it re-launched and the OS blocked it for an invalid code signature. Went and downloaded a clean copy from the web site, and that's what the second comparison is.
