"Rep. Delia C. Ramirez (D-Illinois) has introduced a bill that would abolish not just ICE, but the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) altogether, repealing the 2002 law establishing the agency and replacing it with one focused on protecting civil and human rights.
The wide-ranging legislation, dubbed the Reimagining Safety Act, would repeal the Homeland Security Act. Signed by President George W. Bush as part of his administration’s post-9/11 “war on terror,” the transformational bill created DHS and led to the establishment of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The bill would abolish DHS, CBP, and ICE — going further than the progressive call to abolish ICE. Other offices currently housed within the department, like Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the Coast Guard, Citizenship and Immigration Services, and the customs functions of CBP would be broken off into different authorities.
“We know that DHS was intentionally established with an overbroad mission and unchecked power. The last two years have made it visible what so many communities have actually been saying for decades: That DHS, frankly, is the single greatest threat to our public safety today,” Ramirez said in a press conference previewing the legislation last month. “We must strip away every single tool they are using to terrorize us.”
In DHS’s place, Ramirez’s bill would create a cabinet-level “Department of Community Safety,” which would address community concerns ranging from gun violence to disaster relief, using a public health-based approach. All immigration detention centers would be shuttered.
The legislation comes as DHS has ballooned into one of the largest agencies in the U.S. government in just 24 years of existence, with its authorities having been expanded by every subsequent presidential administration since its establishment.
Now, it has become central in executing President Donald Trump’s agenda, carrying out his administration’s fascist campaign of mass deportation, surveillance, and suppression of communities across the U.S."

"Accretion is especially familiar in systems involving black holes and neutron stars. Although these objects can be extremely massive, their physical dimensions are relatively small. Material falling toward a black hole, for example, often forms a swirling disk around it before moving inward.
But ZTF J0440+2325 appears to work differently.
Rather than a black hole or neutron star collecting matter, an ordinary low-mass star is receiving material from a nearby brown dwarf. Because the star has a much larger physical surface than a compact object such as a black hole, the incoming material can strike it directly.
"The difference here is, the thing absorbing matter is not a tiny black hole but a star, which is relatively big in size," Burdge explains. "So matter just pummels directly onto the surface, at very high speeds, like an asteroid hitting the Moon.""

"… This point was demonstrated recently by Canadian software engineer and YouTuber Anthony Sistilli, of Brampton, Ontario, a city that recently spent 2 million Canadian dollars on “high-resolution cameras, along with automated licence plate recognition technology.” A month or so ago, Sistilli built his own ALPR camera and set it up to track the movement of police cars. He posted several videos on TikTok about the camera, explaining how he built it and how it works, describing it as “a personal Flock surveillance camera to Flock the Flockers.”
Local police got wind of this, because according to a video posted on YouTube earlier this week, two officers from Peel Regional Police allegedly turned up at Sistilli’s front door to ask what his “intentions” were for the data he gathered. In this video, Sistilli points out the rich irony of the situation: “One of [the officers] took the time to specifically mention how scary it would be for them, because people would be able to find out where they lived, when they got on their shift and what they were doing throughout the day, and that that type of powerful information could put them personally at risk [from] any bad apples that might want to track them down.” …"

"A new study suggests that the trans fats naturally present in dairy foods, including milk, butter, and cheese, do not increase the risk of heart disease or type 2 diabetes.
Researchers reviewed evidence from 22 studies involving thousands of participants in Europe, Canada and the United States. Their findings indicate that naturally occurring dairy trans fats act differently in the body from industrial trans fats. While industrial trans fats are strongly associated with heart disease, the naturally occurring forms found in dairy did not appear to carry the same risk."

"I read Gödel, Escher, Bach in high school, and it warped my brain. In that book and later in I Am a Strange Loop, Hofstadter argued that human consciousness arises from an intricate, self-referential feedback loop. A system of symbols acquires the ability to reflect upon itself, crossing hierarchical levels until an "I" emerges from the tangle. For decades, Hofstadter seemed to suggest that if we ever built an intelligence, it would arrive through that same kind of deep, recursive, analogical architecture.
Then LLMs landed, and Hofstadter has been openly devastated. In interviews—most notably in The New York Times and in video discussions like his interview on the state of AI—he’s spoken about the profound existential vertigo of watching systems like GPT-4 "scaring the daylights out of me" by producing witty, analogical, seemingly profound text without having traversed the slow, decades-long path of embodied human living. It felt to him like an unsettling shortcut, threatening to reduce the sanctity of mind and decades of his life's work to feed-forward statistical tricks."

"In Greenland news:
–Yesterday at the UN, Trump made a big show of signing an agreement with Denmark and Greenland, an agreement which Trump believes gives him total control of Greenland.
–The agreement is actually the same agreement the countries signed in 1951, repackaged to make Trump think it was a new agreement. But that’s not the best part.
–The best part is that the agreement is only valid as long as the US stays in NATO. (I’m sure Trump has no idea that’s in there.) This either means Trump will have to stop threatening to leave NATO, or, if he did, it stops Trump from having ANY control over Greenland, including the bases we currently have there."

"Finally, I have a movie to tell you about. I don’t usually do movie reviews here, but this one is a must see:
–It’s called COYOTE VS. ACME, and it’s the story of how Wile E. Coyote gets fed up with all those malfunctioning Acme products and decides to get a lawyer (an ambulance chaser, of course) and sue the company, which bears an uncanny resemblance to Paramount and the Ellisons, or Amazon, or any of a number of billionaires/government entities. And it’s the timeless story of the underdog against the establishment.
–The movie is unbelievably clever, with all the Looney Tunes cartoons characters making cameo appearances and clever inside jokes and all your favorite cartoon gags (one reviewer called it the best Looney Tunes cartoon ever made), plus references to ERIN BROCKOVICH and SPOTLIGHT and MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON. But it’s not just jokes and mayhem. At heart it’s a very serious movie about our times and our situation. It’s all about trying and failing and trying and failing against impossible odds until you are absolutely exhausted and just want to give up (Sound familiar?) and why you should keep on trying anyway. And it’s a very touching movie, too.
–And a profound one. When Wile E. Coyote (who, if you’ll remember is only able to communicate by holding up signs), holds up one that says, “It’s a limited number of signs,” I thought, “That may be the best summation of the human condition and our communication abilities that I’ve ever seen.”
–But there’s also another reason to see the movie, and that’s because the off-screen story of the movie is almost identical to that of the movie. COYOTE VS ACME almost didn’t see the light of day. Warner Brothers made the movie and then shelved it, intending never to show it, no direct to video or direct to streaming or anything. They were just going to put it in the vault and take the tax loss. They didn’t do that because it was bad–it tested well with test audiences and there was lots of anticipation about its release. They did it because of what the movie was about and what it said.
–But the fans weren’t having it. They picketed, wrote letters to Warner Brothers, and rallied […] A guy in a Wile E. Coyote outfit and holding up a sign (naturally) picketed the studio for days and film makers left angry messages.
–Warner Brothers finally gave in to the pressure and sold the distribution rights to Ketchup Entertainment, who released it last week. It came in 2nd and 3rd in attendance for its first two weekends, and Ketchup has already earned back its investment.)
–The dedication at the end of the closing credits reads, “Dedicated to everyone who posted, shared, held up signs, and spoke out when it counted. This film made it to the big screen because of you.” Which, given the current situation at Warner Brothers and Paramount, is a reason to see it all by itself. But as I said, it’s also a terrific movie.
Best comment of the day, from COYOTE VS. ACME: “These companies think they can do whatever they want. We’re sick of it.”"

"Among some of Netflix's most ambitious gems is a sci-fi series unlike any other in TV history. The quality masterpiece, Sense8 centers around eight strangers—Will Gorski (Brian J. Smith), Riley Blue (Tuppence Middleton), Sun Bak (Bae Doona), Nomi Marks (Jamie Clayton), Kala Dandekar (Tina Desai), Wolfgang Bogdanow (Max Riemelt), Lito Rodriguez (Miguel Ángel Silvestre), and Capheus Onyango (Toby Onwumere)—who, despite being separated by oceans, are mentally and emotionally linked, able to share memories, feelings, skills, and terrifying danger.
"Sense8 is a true sci-fi spectacle, acting not only as a pure celebration of love, understanding, and what makes humanity beautiful, but also a thrilling exploration of identity, psychic connection, and survival that frequently finds new ways to bring its protagonists together despite them living so very far apart. It’s a truly powerful series, with each of its episodes expanding the idea that being truly seen by someone else can be its own form of desperate survival. Sense8 is no doubt one of Netflix's most rallying shows, as it rose from cancellation through the pure devotion fans held for the amazing series. The series is a spectacular gem that is simply too underrated for its status as a genuine masterpiece. Sense8’s boldness and will to go where very few TV shows have makes it a quality pick for this list of shows with truly masterful installments."

"Trump’s attempt to use the United States Postal Service to screen mail-in voting has recently had a test run. Yesterday, Jim Saksa of Democracy Docket picked up a story from Jeff Berlew of the Tallahassee Democrat to report that the USPS rejected mailed ballots from Leon County, in Florida, because the words “return service requested” were only 0.236 inches from the election office’s return address. They were supposed to be a full quarter-inch apart. So, the delivery of those mail in ballots came down to a federal complaint about a spacing issue of 0.014 of an inch."

"Space opera embraces the romanticist outlook. This is inherently problematic, for it is capable of spawning totalitarian nightmares. To understand this point, I dare you to read Marinetti's Futurist Manifesto from 1909 and not recognize it both as a masterpiece of romantic rhetoric and as one of the founding texts of Fascism—very specifically the Italian Fascist movement (Nazism and Spanish clerico-fascism were later tumors on the rancid politics of violence and misogyny that Marinetti unleashed).
It's not possible to examine space opera, or planetary romance, and not acknowledge the pernicious fascistic imagery in both subgenres. Michael Moorcock wrote a magisterial essay about this nexus in the wake of Star Wars (the first movie): I strongly recommend reading his Starship Stormtroopers before pressing on if you're not already familiar with it."

"Like vaccines, antitrust worked too well. By the time Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan decided to welcome "efficient" monopolies, it had been so long since the world had been brought to the brink of ruin by oligarchs that it was easy to sell the pain of "lost efficiency" as worse than the distant horrors of the Gilded Age.
As the old joke goes, "When it don't rain the roof don't leak; when it's raining, I can't hardly fix it." We got rid of antitrust because it had been so long since oligarchs ran the world, we forgot how bad they'd made everything. Now that oligarchs are driving civilization off a cliff, we can't imagine fighting these seemingly omnipotent monsters.
We can fix this, just as our not-so-distant ancestors did when they tamed their robber barons. It won't be easy. It starts with remembering."

"–The whistleblower said they have designed a system to disenfranchise millions of voters.
–The whistleblower sent his report to Dem Senator Richard Blumenthal, who just made it public.
–There are two reasons Trump is determined to shut down voting by mail: 1) far more Democrats than Republicans vote by mail, and 2) there is a paper trail that can’t be tampered with for voting by mail. Many states have voting machines for in-person voting that have no paper trail.
–Some states, like Colorado and Oregon, do all their voting by mail, and this would completely shut that down.
–The whistleblower says this is all illegal. State AGs should be charging the US Postmaster General and every USPS employee with state election interference charges.
–Governor Gavin Newsom demanded that Trump officials face prison time following the release of the report. Newsom: “Defying court orders to engage in election interference should bring prison time. Lock them up. Defend democracy.”"

"The war is not continuing because it can be won. Everybody who would know says it can’t. The war is continuing because stopping it would require Donald Trump to admit to Donald Trump that it didn’t work, and admitting it didn’t work would require him to admit that he didn’t work, and that — that little sentence, “I was wrong” — is the one thing this man has spent seventy-some years of his life building an entire personality to avoid ever having to say. He would genuinely rather do this. Destroy the global economy. Ruin your life. Kill your daughters and sons. He would rather do all of this than feel that for four seconds.
That’s what a malignant narcissist is, by the way, when you strip the clinical wallpaper off it. It’s someone for whom losing isn’t a setback, it’s a death. So they will spend anything to avoid it. And normally that’s a personal tragedy — it wrecks their marriages, it ruins their group chats, their kids don’t call. It’s sad. But you hand that same wiring the largest military in the history of the planet, and now the thing he’s spending to protect his feelings is us. Eighteen coffins, so far, so he doesn’t have to lose. The global economy wobbling on the axis of one disordered, unstable old guy’s ego. He does not care about anyone but himself, and that means that if sending countless numbers of us to our deaths is the price he has to pay to protect himself, is not just worth it, it’s a pleasant bargain, as easy for Trump as breathing."

"Back in 2023, the NYT became the first major publisher to sue OpenAI. The prominent newspaper alleged that ChatGPT was illegally trained on its articles, infringed on its copyrights by outputting articles verbatim, and caused market harms by positioning ChatGPT as a substitute for a NYT subscription, as well as reputational harms by falsely attributing claims to NYT reporting. Additionally, ChatGPT outputs summarizing Wirecutter reviews robbed writers of commissions from lost clicks on affiliate links, the NYT alleged.
In the initial complaint, the NYT discussed Microsoft’s supercomputing systems as if they were providing generic cloud computing services. The updated complaint seeks to specify that the supercomputer was tailor-made to help OpenAI infringe and allege that it was built for the explicit purpose of training AI on copyrighted works without permission. And as the NYT alleged, its articles were more heavily weighted by this system, as both firms hoped to train models on the highest quality journalism possible, so that level of writing could be confidently mimicked in outputs."

"Ars Technica: We are now starting to see news stories about how companies that invested in AI are suddenly getting hefty bills.
"Cory Doctorow: They’re getting the bill because the AI companies are trying to get out before they’re stuck holding the bag.
"They want to do IPOs, and to do IPOs, they need to clean up their balance sheet. So they’re like, “I bet these [companies] are pretty price-insensitive. Let’s just jack it. Let’s go from a 90 percent subsidy to a 40 percent subsidy and more than double everyone’s prices. They’ll hang in there.” And then you get the CTO of Uber saying, “I’m not sure why we put AI in the business to begin with, and I really don’t know why we’d use it if it was $20,000 a seat. So I don’t know that we are going to use AI anymore.”
"This is quite a backfire. It actually shows you how insulated these people are from any sense of how their products are received, from what people think of them, from the actual fundamentals of real businesses that have to bring in more money than they spend. It’s weird. I’m hardly a captain of industry or one of the great champions of markets, but I do understand that, by and large, firms should bring in more money than they spend if they are to be an attractive investment prospect."

"The second season of Apple TV’s Sugar is almost here. The show, starring Colin Farrell as the titular Sugar, a private detective who (and here’s a BIG spoiler!) is an alien from outer space disguised as a human, is on another case. He also, as today’s trailer makes clear, becomes romantically entangled with a woman named Charlotte (the spider, not the web!) played by Laura Donnelly.
Here’s the full synopsis for the upcoming episodes:
Season two ushers in the return of Los Angeles’ iconic private detective and film connoisseur John Sugar, who stayed on earth in hopes of finding his sister as he takes on a new missing persons case—searching for the older brother of an up-and-coming local boxer. As the investigation expands into a sinister, city-wide conspiracy, Sugar must reckon with himself to answer the question—how far will he go to do what’s right?"

"those solar panels had to go somewhere. Mostly, they ended up in Pakistan, dumped there at such a massive discount that the country solarized virtually overnight. Pakistani solar installers learned their trade from Tiktok videos set to Tamil film soundtracks, and unwired the country so thoroughly that today, the national power company is in danger of going bust because no one buys their electricity from the grid anymore. Pakistani bridal dowries now routinely include four panels, an inverter and a battery:

"Scientists shocked to find lab gloves may be skewing microplastics data
Mar 29, 2026 at 8:25 PM
A University of Michigan study suggests that the nitrile and latex gloves scientists commonly use could be causing microplastics levels to appear higher than they actually are.
Researchers found that these gloves can unintentionally transfer particles onto lab tools used to analyze air, water, and other environmental samples. The contamination comes from stearates, which are not plastics but can closely resemble them during testing. Because of this, scientists may be detecting particles that are not true microplastics. To reduce this issue, U-M researchers Madeline Clough and Anne McNeil recommend using cleanroom gloves, which release far fewer particles"

"The fear — a completely reasonable one — is that this lawless administration, led by a madman, would manufacture some national emergency declaration to wiggle through one of those gaps and put armed federal forces at the polls before the 2026 midterms.
"What New Mexico did is close that gap at the state level. By making this conduct a state felony regardless of the shenanigans Trump’s legal team dreams up to justify it, enforcement now belongs to state and local prosecutors who answer to New Mexicans, not to the pedo protector club Washington. And because committing a federal crime cannot legally be part of a federal officer’s official duties, those officers would have no federal preemption shield against state criminal charges (Brennan Center for Justice). In other words: we have claws now that don’t depend on Trump’s DOJ deciding to use them."

"In the new study, researchers focused on a molecule called CIRBP, short for cold inducible RNA binding protein. In bowhead whale tissue, they found CIRBP levels roughly one hundred times higher than in other mammals, suggesting that this protein is a major part of the whale’s repair toolkit.
"When the team added the bowhead version of CIRBP to human cells in the lab, the cells fixed serious DNA breaks more accurately and produced fewer mutations. Fruit flies engineered to make extra CIRBP not only survived radiation better, they also lived longer than normal flies, hinting that this repair strategy works across very different species.
"The study suggests that bowhead whales do not rely mainly on extra copies of cancer fighting genes, as elephants do, but instead on unusually precise DNA repair. Their cells seem to follow a quiet rule of repair rather than destroy, fixing damage instead of simply killing off stressed cells, which may help tissues stay healthy for many decades…."

"No one likes being recorded by Meta’s Ray-Bans smart glasses, which have gotten increasingly popular in the last year or so. Now the wearers know how everyone else feels.
"According to a joint investigation published by Swedish newspapers Svenska Dagbladet and Göteborgs-Posten, sensitive and personal footage captured by the devices—including people going to the bathroom, getting dressed, and having sex—is being reviewed by contractors who see all of it uncensored.
"The investigation found that much of the footage captured by Meta’s smart glasses, of which more than seven million pairs have reportedly been sold, is reviewed by contracted workers at a Kenya-based company called Sama. These workers are data annotators who are tasked with reviewing footage captured from the camera on the glasses and labeling it to help AI systems get better at identifying what they see. "Twenty-nine year old [C.P.] has been regularly protesting outside his local ICE facility in South Portland for months, offering up his apartment to fellow protesters to use the bathroom or wash off pepper spray[…]
"To the Department of Homeland Security, “he is the leader of Antifa in Portland, OR.”
"That phrase appears in an internal report produced by DHS, the largest law enforcement agency in the country. As they see it, [C.P]—a young man accused of no crime […]—is a domestic terrorist.
"In [C.P.]’s apartment, Fox News hosts saw something sinister: an “Antifa safe house,” as they called it in multiple segments. This kind of idiocy is hardly unprecedented by the standards of cable news, of course; but the federal government is buying into the hysteria, too. Documents leaked to me show [C.P.] and countless American protesters have been branded as domestic terrorists. As a result, their private information is being collected and stored in a DHS intelligence system shown below."

"Vivaldi has raised a middle finger to the influx of AI in the browser space with its latest version.
"Basically, what we are finding is that people hate AI," CEO Jon von Tetzchner tells The Register.
"Von Tetzchner was talking to us as the company launched version 7.8 of its browser. The centerpiece of the release is a new tab tiling system that allows users to work with multiple pages simultaneously. There are also improvements to email and several quality-of-life tweaks that will please the browser's fans.
[…]
"That's not to say that AI doesn't have limited uses, as far as Vivaldi is concerned. It's useful for translations and research. However, does it belong in the browser, potentially even taking action for the user? Von Tetzchner doesn't think so.
He reckons that AI in browsers is being used as a data collection tool – as a company, Vivaldi has made much of user privacy. Hence, the CEO said AI "is something that's being pushed on to people.""

"Starting in late November and early December, we decided to go in on a hotel campaign. We built extensive infrastructure to identify where ICE was staying, then started showing up in the middle of the night and making noise outside.
"The logic is simple: if you make noise outside hotels, ICE agents won’t want to stay there, and hotels won’t want to house them. If enough hotels don’t want to house ICE, then they don’t have somewhere to stay. It’s both about actual logistics and also socializing the idea that ordinary people are running institutions that support ICE to operate.
"I’m excited to do this for hotels but also to have people understand the logic enough that they start thinking about it everywhere ICE interacts: rental car companies, restaurants. It’s been working really well with hotels in general, and Hilton in particular."

That information quickly surfaced in Russian channels, confirming their worst fears. The conclusion among allies is chillingly direct: information shared with Trump cannot be trusted to stay out of Vladimir Putin’s hands."

"Reading the 18th Century novel is very much like riding a rambunctious horse. Actually, bowling along in a carriage; 100 years later, Eliot and the great Victorian novelists who were living with the noisy, fast, smoke-gouting trains would write with nostalgia of the grace and quietude and elegance of carriage travel. But the 17th Century novel depicts it as it more likely was, with its stuffy heat, travel-sickness from the jolts, and frequent breakdowns and overturns in the terrible roads, with highwaymen everywhere as there was no real law and order on the roads"

"The findings were surprising. Instead of degrading the fragile desert, the solar panels appeared to be giving it new life.
From wasteland to microclimate
One of the most remarkable discoveries was the improvement in soil health and overall ecological vitality beneath the panels:
• Areas directly under the panels scored 0.4393 for “general” ecological health.
• Transitional zones between the panels and the open desert rated lower, at 0.2858.
• The untouched desert surrounding the site had the weakest score—0.2802.
The reason? The panels provide constant shade, trapping moisture, lowering ground temperatures, and reducing evaporation. In dry regions where water is scarce, even small shifts in these factors can spark major changes—encouraging plant growth and supporting microscopic organisms vital for fertile soil."

Michael Schur's The Good Place was a perfect meditation on the meaning of life by exploring the silliness of the afterlife (we make our own meaning by living, but we should think about what we owe to others as well as ourselves).
Michael Schur's Man on the Inside uses some of the same actors (Ted Danson, et al.) and also explores detective work in a unique way: by the investigators becoming friends with the suspects and working to help them as well as trying to solve the mystery. The first season was good but the second season was even better.

"They call Portland a war zone because joy gives them hives. Show them a Pride flag and they start convulsing like someone unplugged their moral life support. They don’t fear violence; they fetishize it. What they fear is happiness, because happy people don’t need saviors or strongmen. They see laughter and call it an uprising. They see dancing and call it decay. They see freedom and reach for tear gas. What they crave isn’t order; it’s obedience. Not peace, but punishment. They want the whole country as joyless, constipated, and spiritually malnourished as they are, sitting in the dark, clutching their guns, baptizing their bitterness, and calling it patriotism.
"Because joy terrifies them. Laughter cannot be licensed. Dancing does not pay taxes. Nudity refuses to wear shame. They shake at the sight of people who have nothing to hide.
"And that is why Portland matters."

"The southern grasshopper mouse is found in northern Mexico and the southwest of the United States, including the Sonoran Desert. It measures roughly 15 centimeters (5.9 inches) from the tip of its nose to its tail and weighs somewhere between 20-50 grams (>0.1 pounds). Oh, and it howls like a wolf.
"Despite being literally mouse-sized, these diminutive little rodents are actually top-level carnivores and voracious predators and will attack pretty much anything smaller than they are for food. While they have been recorded eating some plant material, the majority of their diet is grasshoppers, scorpions, and other arthropods. Their Latin name, Onychomys, means “clawed mouse” as their paws and even fingernails are specially adapted to hold onto slippery, struggling prey. Compared to deer mice, they even have a stronger bite force for killing their dinner."

Glenda Poulter
My novel, _Never Too Late_, was released by Affinity Rainbow Publications worldwide yesterday. The novel is about two mature women (over 60) who first become friends and then more. The book is available at the vendors listed below the blurb.
Here is the blurb:
After the death of her
long-time partner, and a scandal at the school where she taught music and art, Janice Halston emerged as a shadow of herself. Feeling shaken, cautious and artistically blocked, all she wants is to be left alone to tend her gardens.
Tam Murphy lost her wife and son within a short time of each other. Her life now revolves around her daughter Mae, and granddaughter, Ocee, hoping they can help fill the void from her losses.

But when Akey’s team applied their tool, IBDmix, they found that much of the apparent diversity in #Neanderthal DNA actually came from genes inherited from modern humans, who had far larger populations. With this new insight, scientists lowered their estimate of the Neanderthal breeding population from about 3,400 individuals to roughly 2,400.Taken together, these findings help explain how Neanderthals disappeared from the fossil and genetic record around 30,000 years ago.
"I don't like to say 'extinction,' because I think Neanderthals were largely absorbed," said Akey. His idea is that Neanderthal populations slowly shrank until the last survivors were folded into modern human communities.…"
