In other news, our cat Loup-Loup didn't make it. He died peacefully this morning, eleven and a half years old. We're not sure why but general organ failure seems to be the vet's opinion. Something important just stopped working. 😿
He will be missed, he was quite the character.

Ha, a nameless competitor and their client's head of digital (UK local government) are bragging about the fact they took sites offline yesterday "for safety" and patting themselves on the back. We decided we had enough defence in depth to stay up, as long as we stayed alert and patched asap, so we informed clients what we were doing and why - and nobody went offline. I find it a strange boast that they were so panicked they took their site down.

The leader of the #UK Tory Party linking the French riots to immigration for her own political capital. I guess nobody should be surprised, but it's disgusting stuff. It's either horrendous ignorance or (more likely) the worst kind of cynicism. Does she think the Croydon riots were because of immigration too?

And tonight we have a really poorly cat. 😿 He's not eating, not moving much, not a happy chap. He had a blood test this afternoon that shows his kidney function isn't brilliant, but we've had a cat die of kidney failure and her blood results were off the chart. His are not great, but nowhere near badly sick levels, so I'm a bit surprised the vet sent my wife away with kidney supplements and a pat on the back. For me he's way too sick with the blood results he has for it to be his kidneys.

Attached a waterproof push-switch to a dry contact on the electric gate motherboard this evening (in the dark!) ... much handier, you can push to exit now without hunting about for a remote. And I've sited it so you can use it to get in too, if you know where it is. (I didn't fit this for security, just convenience.)

The new electric 2CV from Citroën looks pretty funky. But it's Stellantis. Let's see what abomination of a platform they plonk it on before we get too excited. With a bit of luck they'll borrow something good from Leapmotor. If they get it right it'll be amazing. If they get it wrong, it'll be like the Fiat 500e (which, btw, is dreadful imho). #EV

I bought this Swiss chronograph on eBay about 20 years ago. The crystal was cracked and it was a bit dirty, but it just worked so I wore it a lot. Earlier this year the crown fell out, so I finally sent it for repair, service and new crystal. I'm super pleased, it's come out really nice and the watchmaker says it's in really good general condition and worth about double what the renovation cost, so definitely worth looking after. 😎 // @nprofile…hqcg

Moved my music streaming *again*, this time from Tidal to Deezer. (My wife was losing it with Tidal, seems the iOS app is pretty terrible. Persuaded her not to go back to Spotify - we all go together, because family plan.) It seems good so far, buffering is definitely better than Tidal, which was one beef my wife had that I can agree with. Otherwise, honestly, Tidal was fine on my Android phone - just the buffering thing was a bit annoying, since we live in a village with patchy 5G coverage.

Chatting to my daughter about the lycée strikes in France. It's a mixed bag. I sympathise with the students, but some of the issues they have are directly because of the actions of other groups (not the government) and some are due to things beyond anyone's control. If I were able to, I'd help the students be a lot more directed with their demands. But I have the feeling everyone's just too angry now, nobody's even listening to the explanations.

2026-10-06 18:02:43 UTC

Still waiting for stats to trickle in for a lot of the #EU, but you know how I said #EV sales were 38.3% of new vehicles in #France in August? Well it's up to 41.7% for September, another 8% month on month. Still on track for the "Denmark effect", where 35% was the tipping point and it very quickly raced away to over 80%. BEVs are now normal, no longer exotic, and with the price of fossil fuels showing no sign of abating they're just the obvious choice.

1,338 kilometres in an Audi A6 e-tron. Impressive stuff!
https://www.electrive.com/2026/09/25/audi-a6-e-tron-travels-1338-km-without-recharging/
The other thing that's impressive is the normal WLTP range of 777 kilometres. People don't really look much at range for ICE cars, but that's approaching the same as Audi's petrol A6. And well beyond my measure of "can I get to Milan without stopping plus a bit of ducking about", which is what my Volvo 940 with long-range tank used to do.
More nails in the #EV range anxiety coffin. 👍

That thing where people just reach for #AI without thinking. I just saw a suggestion that you could use a #Redmine webhook so that 'Custom AI agents can subscribe to events: "When a high-priority bug is created, summarize it and post to incident-channel".'
Errr. Why would you even?? 10 lines of code and a cron job running every minute would do the same job for a fraction of the energy cost.

In August 38.3% of new vehicles in #France were #BEV cars. They are surging, and pure ICE vehicle sales are now under 15%. When sales crossed the 35% mark in Denmark, within a year most new cars were electric. With petrol well over €2 a litre I can only see September figures being even higher. Ironically, for someone who wants to boost fossil fuels, Trump is doing a great job of burying them! He's neatly highlighted with his antics that energy security means renewables and electrification. #ev

Followed a YouTube video to change the washer pump on my daughter's Fiat Panda. Got halfway through removing the inner wing for access (which is a massive pita) then realised the video was for a Mk II and in the Mk III (hers) and later Fiat put a little, easy to remove panel for access to the washer pump! 😂 Much swearing as I put all the stupid screws and clips back in... If I ever have to do it again, I'll be much quicker. It really is a 10 minute job on the Mk III. Less so on the Mk II.

This is interesting. Not only does it suggest haulage companies will naturally switch to #EV options going forward (charging infra permitting) but it also repeats the point that hydrogen is not going to be a competitor for BEVs. The answer to range issues is not hydrogen, it's better batteries and more charging stations:

To me this seems like a very smart interim solution for long distance haulage. Sure, there's a combustion engine in the loop if you're doing longer distances, but it's an order of magnitude smaller than a truck engine and it neatly sidesteps the current infrastructure lag in many countries:

@nprofile…8xa4 The fury of the friends/colleagues of Jason Arday is due to the behaviour of the media and the University of Cambridge. There was no case to answer, his plagiarism accusations had already been investigated and he'd been cleared YEARS ago. There was nothing new to report, but the media reported already debunked lies as (allegedly) true (who paid? Farage?) and whipped it up. Then the uni showed how spineless it is, throwing a whole can of nitro on the fire by launching an "investigation".

I appreciate this is very much a first world problem, but can anyone recommend a good, cheap milk frother? We had a jug system, which was good but really slow (it died recently). I know the Aeroccino is good, but man, €80 to froth a bit of milk? My wife bought a cheap milk whisk in the supermarket, but it spins so quickly the milk goes everywhere unless you use a huge jug or press it against the bottom of the cup to slow it down (ergo it froths less well). Meanwhile, approximately 100,000 desperate people broke into a Spanish enclave IN NORTH AFRICA. (Nowhere near being able to travel to the #EU, nevermind pose any "threat" to European society. They're still in Africa, FFS.)
And Italy (well, #Meloni, but Italians voted for her) does this:

Golf claps all round, nice work Italian populists. 👏👏👏 Way to make it really clear what a bunch of assholes you really are, in case anyone was starting to think Meloni was maybe ok.

So #Italy is one of the major entry points for "illegal" immigrants and is in the top three for failing to find and process people illegally on its soil. Meanwhile #Spain is one of the most "welcoming" countries in the EU, first place as the country migrants want to settle in, and second only to Germany in the number of migrants they legalise and incorporate into Spanish society. Statistics are all here:

@nprofile…8xa4 Shame on BMW for leading the pack. I believe they were also the first to pay for in-car "services". Didn't they cut heated seats if you didn't subscribe, or some bullshit like that?

Meanwhile he wants to fine Canada for smoke pollution caused by forest fires caused by climate change. The only way this makes any sense is if it's only a massive self-enrichment program for Trump and his pals...

This morning I am reminded not all billionaires are tech bros and oil magnates. Saw a yacht commissioned (though apparently no longer owned) by Steven Spielberg. I'm disappointed someone with his (supposed) politics would buy a superyacht. He's all big on charitable donations, $100,000 here, $100,000 there, but he's sitting on over $5bn in assets and not doing much to distribute them. In fact I did the maths, $100,000 to Spielberg is $40 to me. Real easy to appear generous when you're so rich.

@nprofile…847v He had more than one then. 😅 Because this one also was:
"Built as a luxury state and diplomatic yacht for Marshal Tito."

Going to an agriturismo tonight. For the uninitiated, this is basically death by eating.

Crossed a funny-looking yacht for the second time today, so I looked it up. And it's quite a piece of floating history, built in Croatia in 1959 it was Yugoslav dictator Tito's presidential yacht back in the 1960s.

For context, my dad is a former amateur rally driver and classic car aficionado. My wife, in contrast, comes from a family who consider the car to be a rolling bin.
Current argument: eldest child (now technically adult, therefore my plan is feasible) sat in ID.Buzz with salty wet swimming costume so now I have a butt-shaped salt stain in the upholstery.
I vote she is ostracised from the family forthwith, never to return. My wife says I'm overreacting and it'll come out.
