The Protocol of Trust
Why I Question Everything — And the One Thing I Don't
There's a phrase in the Bitcoin community that functions as both a greeting and a philosophy: Don't trust, verify.
Three words. An entire worldview.
I've spent years building a personal epistemology — a framework for deciding what deserves my belief — and it keeps landing on the same principle. Not cynicism. Not nihilism. Just a stubborn insistence that trust should be earned through evidence and incentive alignment, not granted through credentialism and social pressure.
This puts me at odds with most of the institutional architecture of modern life. And I'm fine with that.
— — —
The Institutional Problem
The case against institutional trust isn't theoretical. It's historical.
Intelligence agencies have lied under oath to Congress. Public health institutions coordinated with technology platforms to suppress legitimate scientific debate during COVID. Financial institutions collapsed the global economy and were rewarded with bailouts funded by the people they harmed. Governments have fabricated pretexts for war — Gulf of Tonkin, Iraqi weapons of mass destruction — and faced no meaningful accountability.
These aren't fringe claims. They're documented, acknowledged, and in many cases declassified. The Church Committee hearings. The Pentagon Papers. Operation Northwoods — a proposed plan by the Joint Chiefs to fabricate terrorist attacks on American soil to justify military action against Cuba, rejected only because Kennedy refused to sign it.
When institutions demonstrate a pattern of dishonesty, withdrawing trust isn't paranoia. It's rational adaptation. The question isn't whether to be skeptical. The question is how far that skepticism should extend and where, if anywhere, it should stop.
— — —
The Epistemology of Cost
I've found my stopping point, and it has nothing to do with credentials, institutional authority, or expert consensus.
I trust testimony that costs the witness everything and benefits them nothing.
This is a filter that almost no institution can pass, because institutional testimony almost always serves institutional interests. There is always a budget to protect, a reputation to manage, a narrative to maintain. The incentive structure is permanently polluted.
But certain individuals throughout history have cleared this bar, and their testimony carries a weight that no press release or peer-reviewed study can match.
Edward Snowden had a six-figure salary, a home in Hawaii, and a comfortable life inside the intelligence community. He sacrificed all of it to expose mass surveillance programs that violated the constitutional rights of millions. He has lived in exile ever since. He will likely never return home.
Julian Assange spent years confined in an embassy and then imprisoned for the act of publishing information that powerful people wanted suppressed. The message to future whistleblowers was unambiguous: speak, and we will destroy your life.
The disciples of Christ were beaten, imprisoned, and executed for claiming that a crucified man rose from the dead. They had every incentive to recant. Not one of them did. Peter was crucified upside down. James was beheaded. Paul was imprisoned repeatedly and ultimately killed. Whatever you believe about the resurrection, you cannot credibly argue that these men were running a con. Grifters don't die for the grift.
The common thread is incentive purity. When testimony costs the witness everything — their freedom, their safety, their life — and benefits them nothing, the probability of that testimony being a deliberate lie approaches zero. The witness may be wrong. They may be deluded. But they are not lying. And in a world saturated with managed narratives, that distinction matters enormously.

The Bitcoin Parallel
This same principle explains why Bitcoin resonates with me at a level that goes beyond finance or investment.
Every monetary system in history has been subject to the same failure mode: the humans who control the system eventually abuse that control. Central banks inflate currencies to serve political objectives. Financial institutions freeze accounts, deny services, and gate access based on compliance with agendas that have nothing to do with the account holder's rights. The rules change when it becomes convenient for the rule-makers to change them.
Bitcoin's creator — the pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto — solved this problem by removing humans from the trust equation entirely. The monetary policy is written in code. Twenty-one million coins. No exceptions. No committee can vote to inflate the supply. No executive can freeze your wallet. No central authority can change the rules because the political winds shifted.
The protocol executes without bias and cannot be swayed. It doesn't care about your title, your connections, or your political alignment. It simply enforces the rules as written.
I run a full Bitcoin node — not because I need to, but because the philosophy demands it. Don't trust someone else's copy of the ledger. Verify independently. Sovereignty over your money is inseparable from sovereignty over your mind.
— — —
The Uncomfortable Middle
I want to be honest about something, because intellectual honesty is the only currency I'm not willing to debase.
Institutional skepticism has a failure mode. When distrust becomes reflexive — when every official claim is assumed false and every counter-narrative is assumed true — you haven't escaped the institutional frame. You've just inverted it. Your worldview is still being defined by the institution, only in negative. That's not sovereignty. That's reaction.
I've caught myself in this trap. The thrill of the counter-narrative is real. There's a dopamine hit in feeling like you see through what everyone else accepts. That feeling disguises itself as courage, but it's also a bias — and it's one that rarely gets interrogated because the conspiracy-minded community rewards it rather than challenging it.
The truly sovereign position is harder than either trust or distrust. It requires evaluating each claim on its own evidence, following the data wherever it leads, and accepting the conclusion even when it's boring, even when it aligns with the mainstream, even when no podcast will celebrate you for reaching it.
I hold competing ideas in tension deliberately. I believe institutions lie routinely. I also believe that some of the things institutions say are independently verifiable and true. I believe history is shaped by power. I also believe that not all of history is fabricated. The space between these positions is narrow and uncomfortable, and it's exactly where honest thinking lives.

The Anchor
In a world where I question nearly everything, I've chosen one deliberate leap of faith.
Christianity is my anchor — not because I can prove it empirically, but because the testimony supporting it was purchased at the highest possible price by men who had nothing to gain from a lie. The resurrection claim either happened or it didn't, but the men who made the claim died for it. That places their testimony in a category that no modern institution can reach.
My faith gives me a fixed point. It provides the foundation of purpose and meaning that prevents radical skepticism from dissolving into nihilism. It tells me that truth is knowable, that creation is ordered, and that reality is intelligible — even when powerful men work to obscure it.
Everything else gets the full treatment. Every institution, every official narrative, every credentialed authority must show me the evidence and the incentive structure. I'll decide for myself. I won't outsource my judgment to people who have demonstrated, repeatedly, that they will sacrifice truth for institutional preservation.
— — —
The Protocol
So here it is, stripped to its core:
Sovereignty over my faith. Sovereignty over my mind. Sovereignty over my money.
One principle, applied across every domain. Trust what has been tested at the highest cost. Verify everything else independently. Accept the discomfort of not knowing when the evidence isn't sufficient. Refuse to let either institutional authority or counter-cultural identity make the decision for you.
Don't trust. Verify.
And when verification isn't possible, have the honesty to say so — and the courage to keep asking.

Just set up a Lightning Piggy for my two boys (ages 5 and 7) and I'm pumped to share this journey!
As a Bitcoin maxi dad, I've been orange-pilling my kids since day one. Between our conversations at home, the Tuttle Twins books, and watching the cartoons together, they're starting to understand sound money and why we save in sats, not dollars.
I've been looking for a way to reward their hard work doing chores around the house, but paying them in fiat never felt right. Why teach them to save in something that loses value?
Enter the Lightning Piggy.
Huge thanks to my friend @nprofile…mczw who helped 3D print the ROBOTECHY case. And massive shoutout to the @nprofile…fhxk community for creating such an awesome open-source project. This is exactly what Bitcoin family adoption looks like.
If you're a father or family looking for a fun project that teaches your kids about Bitcoin, self-sovereignty, and saving, I can't recommend this enough. It's hands-on STEM learning meets financial education. Build it together, learn together, stack together.
And if anyone is feeling generous and wants to help bring some joy to these boys and watch their piggy grow...every sat counts and puts a huge smile on their faces:
