Wreckers can come from the left or the center. Their common attribute is less ideological than it is dispositional: a pathological need to be the main character of American politics.

JD Vance’s not so subtle point is that the United States belongs to white Christian men, and the rest of us who don’t meet all three qualifications only belong here insofar as our betters choose to tolerate us.

I read Rubio’s speech where he does a Prager U recap of Ancient Greek history, and the funniest part is where he praises Achilles for seeking glory in Troy even though it means his death.
Yeah, Marco, the Iliad is great. What’s Achilles up to in the sequel?

There's this really odd pattern with Bari Weiss, JD Vance, Richard Hanania etc, where they rise to prominence because their main skill is cultivating the friendship of wealthy patrons, but it's impossible to figure out how they do it because they constantly exude a pungent strain of anti-charisma.

One thing I learned when I was just out of college and watching 6-8 hours of Fox News a day for my research job at Media Matters: Ingesting hours of propaganda on a daily basis changes you, no matter how smart you think you are. If you don't notice the changes, that just makes you an easier mark.

Thesis: ICE is un-American and the Minneapolis protestors are real Americans.
Antithesis: Ackshually ICE is operating in a long American tradition of racist terror.
Synthesis: Minneapolis is now the epicenter of a clash between two distinct but historically grounded American political traditions.

Trump did the thing, everyone knows he did the thing, and he's got an entire political party and associated media apparatus trying to cover up his clear involvement in the thing. One of the sickest, most sordid chapters in an especially sick and sordid period of modern American history.

I'm hard-pressed to think of a non-Jewish Democratic politician who has spoken to Jews with more respect and empathy than Mamdani. The fact that many Jewish establishment orgs are going after him while staying relatively mum on resurgent Nazism is a disaster, both for American Jews and in general.

The irony is that Prop 13 is an obstacle to solving the housing shortage, so it's indirectly raising your property taxes if you bought a home in California in the 21st century.

Republican officials have spent years psy-oping themselves into thinking that there are no sincere, good faith liberals or progressives anywhere in America. So no wonder they're totally unequipped to deal with a large crowd of normal people waving American flags.

It's somehow both wildly underreported and just out in the open that the vice president is either a neo-Nazi or, at a bare minimum, a neo-Nazi fellow traveler.

One reason I do not think Trump is going to create a 1,000 year reich is because he failed to cancel a middling funnyman and immediately pivoted to trying to outlaw not having a headache.

The fact that CBP was dispatched to menace a press conference by the duly elected governor of California should really put to bed any argument about whether these federal deployments are a response to crime rates. As if it weren't already obvious what this is about.

One thing that has sort of surprised me is that it does really seem like the desire to be ruled by a powerful fascist daddy is stronger in the median elite journalist than in the median voter.

Folks, the fact that Warren has been stumping for Mamdani should be a very clear indicator that the 2020 Democratic presidential primary is over. Another clear indicator should be that it is literally 2025.

With the caveat that I am no political strategist, my take on whether to Glonzo the Epstein Files story is that demagoguery has always been central to the American political vernacular and I don't think liberals/the left should get too precious about this sort of thing now.

tl;dr if you already have a housing shortage, then raising the median income will actually *cause* homelessness. The only way out of this trap is to ensure that housing production keeps pace with wage growth.

You know, if education polarization is one of the central driving forces behind the rise of the MAGA coalition, then it follows that one key to building a durable pro-democracy electorate is building out public college and university systems across the country.

Occurs to me that part of the reason why NYT/Politico/et al are mad about their lack of access to Harris is because without access the political desk is totally adrift. There’s shockingly little capacity to, say, read campaign policy papers and find the story in there.

It is September 2024. Gretchen Whitmer has just gone on CNN and called JD Vance "a former gifted kid with high-functioning anxiety." The Democratic coalition is shattered, Trump is projected to win 49 states.
