Well I did get paid today
“Nine years ago, 150,000 people paid Cards Against Humanity $15 to protect a pristine parcel of land on the US-Mexico border from racist billionaire Donald Trump's stupid wall.
“Two years ago, we discovered that an even richer, more racist billionaire—Elon Musk—snuck up on us from behind and completely fucked that land with gravel, tractors, and space garbage.
“Today, we’re announcing the Official Elon Musk is a Sad Little Bitch with No Friends Monument Design Committee. For just $10, you can join a movement of like-minded people working together to force a moment of introspection upon the world’s richest, ugliest little bitch.”

Here are the "plain English" guidelines:
— Any servers that want to use the Mastodon name and logo in their branding (not domain!) should seek express written permission from Mastodon, which is granted on a case-by-case basis.
— The word Mastodon should never be used in the main part of a server’s domain (a subdomain is allowed).** We will not retroactively enforce this on **servers created before May 13, 2026.**
— Existing servers using the Mastodon name in their domain must include this disclaimer: “This [server/site] is not affiliated with or endorsed by Mastodon GmbH or Mastodon Inc.”
— Any fair use mentions or derivative usage of the Mastodon name (such as mstdn) should include the disclaimer.

Hey friends, it's me again :blobfoxwave:
We have more news to share today, though I must admit, this news is a little less fun.
Recently, the @nprofile…zeh9 team received a fair number of questions about our trade mark policy. We realised we could add some guidelines to help make the Policy more clear, so over the last few months, we did just that! I'll post a "plain English" version of the guidelines as a comment.
You can read more background about the changes we made, and see the guidelines themselves, in this blog post:
https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2026/08/sharing-guidelines-about-mastodons-trade-mark-policy/
And the trade mark policy page is updated too:

Inshallah is a beautiful phrase.
I love the message of optimistic acceptance. (Or the other meanings in this thread, which I also like!) And personally, I geek out about how words and phrases sound. I find inshallah to be poetry.
I learned about the phrase from my sister’s ex-husband who was #Persian. He spoke #Farsi but he taught me about inshallah, and told me that it has been adopted into his culture by religious and secular Iranians alike.
Thank you for posting this, Mekka. I hope more people who don’t know about this phrase will learn it! Words are so powerful that they’re almost like magic amulets, and the good ones get stronger the more we repeat them.

The concentration of power in Silicon Valley happened partly because we let it. We accepted a few platforms as inevitable. We built our communities there because that’s where everyone was. It wasn’t because their technology is better. It was a choice—made again and again by the people on those platforms, by investors, and by policymakers.
A different choice is possible, but it requires that those of us building alternatives actually believe what we say about cooperation. It means assuming good faith from people building different projects. It means investing in infrastructure that doesn’t benefit us alone.
We, the builders of the open social web, are the only ones who can make that choice.
It starts with deciding that our mission matters more than winning alone.

According to the @nprofile…fu0r #TechSovereignty package, released today, the #EU is currently reliant on foreign providers for over 80% of its critical digital products, services, and infrastructure. We're thrilled to see the Commission acknowledge that this is an issue, and lay out a strategy to fix it.
We view this announcement as validation of Mastodon’s mission at the highest level; the Commission’s strategy is grounded in European values that Mastodon shares including security, sustainability, and human-centric design.
What’s more, the EU's explicit strategy is to build and deeply invest in #OpenSource offerings across the entire technology stack. The significant nature of this commitment provides institutional validation and will bring significant policy, funding, and competitive advantages to open source projects like #Mastodon.

If you haven’t met them, they’re the grandfather & grandkid duo that co-admin #TurtleIsland, a server focused on building community with Native/Indigenous people, other BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) people, and allies. To me, their story perfectly encapsulates the best thing about the fediverse and Mastodon: People coming together to build a place for themselves.

Mastodon is the anti-influence platform
On the social web we are
- free from the influence of megalomaniacs or any one person
- free from the influence of VCs and profit motivations
- free from the influence of algorithmic manipulation
Plus as a bonus, you can follow a friend's "Instagram" from your "Twitter" account ✨

I’m proud to share my first blog as @nprofile…gadd’s Community Director. Well the first one posted under my name at least 😉
Digital social networking is one of the most important threads in the fabric of our societies. Right now, we’re letting that thread be controlled by social media platforms that let advertisements for scams stay up because they’re profitable, and that use their algorithms to run human research experiments on us without our consent. That’s not the society I want.
“By making the news and truth contingent on advertising budgets we’ve created an environment where any narrative can win, as long as the storyteller is willing to pay. If we allow these conditions to continue, we will leave behind the voices that truly matter; the people and their public institutions. It is critical that those voices not be silenced forever. The promise of the #fediverse is the promise of a better way forward: free from ads and manipulative algorithms, a place built by and for people like you, where #SocialSovereignty is a right and not a privilege.”
In this thread, we asked folks to crowdsource a list of resources so you can find your local representative. Find them, contact them, and tell them this: if you care about a free and just future, and if you care about #DigitalSovereignty, you must leave X and join the fediverse.

"The future of social must be federation. The ultimate power is giving people the ability to create their own spaces, their own communities, to modify the software as they see fit, but without sacrificing the ability of people from different communities to interact with each other. Of course, not every end user is interested in running their own little social network — just like every citizen isn’t interested in running their own little country. A mix between sovereignty and union."

@nprofile…mqs6 Hi there - I’ve just joined the Mastodon team full time, and part of my role is working on mastodon.social and mastodon.online. I’m just getting started and still in learning mode, but I want to say that I’m aware of this issue and the team is actively discussing how we can evolve in a way that both delivers on #Mastodon’s promise of decentralization, and provides a “safe landing place” for new users. I’m grateful for all the ideas and writing you’ve shared. I’m listening, and thank you.

In case you missed it, the fediverse is under attack by a Pro-Russian Propaganda Network. You can learn more about it in the blog post from @nprofile…ax4g below.
Here are two things everyone can do to help combat this:
1. If you see an account posting or spamming Telegram links, report it. Many of the accounts are impersonating news outlets — check verification status, the account's follower count, or the outlet's website to confirm if the account is real or fake.
2. Donate to your local mods if you can, or at least give them a big virtual hug and say thanks. They've been working tirelessly around the clock to combat this and deserve our gratitude and support.
Stay safe out there, friends.

Today I have the distinct honor of representing @nprofile…7nr8 as we are acknowledged by the Digital Public Goods Alliance during the United Nations Office for Digital and Emerging Technologies's Open Source Week.
This news comes at a time when it has never been more imperative for public institutions to communicate directly with their constituents. Rarely in history have we trusted the truth and trusted each other less than we do today. Mastodon provides the infrastructure for organizations to maintain sovereignty over their digital presence, and empowers them to reach out to citizens without algorithmic barriers or paid promotion.
Recognition of Mastodon as a digital public good validates our commitment to building transparent, ethical technology that serves people over profit. Because truly, our values drive everything we do. We believe that true digital freedom comes from the ability of communities to connect, learn, and play together, while preserving each community's right to self-determination.
This recognition belongs to our entire community: every instance admin, developer, and fedizen who believes in building a more human-centered internet. Together, we're showing the world that social media can be transparent, ethical, and community-driven. We're proud to be part of a movement that puts people first and proves that genuine connections flourish when communities have the freedom to govern themselves.
Thank you 💞

Here's my answer — if Mastodon were a person, I'd describe them as kind and geeky. They are the type of friend where it doesn't matter how long we've been apart, we're as close as ever when we see each other again. They have a lot of hobbies and they're always happy to share and tell you all about them.
Mastodon is a chaotic good druid. The chaotic because Mastodon is egalitarian and grassroots. Good because we are trying to create positive change for people and society. Druid because Mastodon's power doesn't come from a divine source. It comes from us. This community — our human nature.

Thanks for asking! These aren’t my plans per se, because my role as a board member is to advise the leadership team as they shape and execute plans for the platform. (I’m bringing my experience in open source communities, social network science/research, and communications/marketing to assist the team). But here are our top priorities, and why I think they’re so important:
1. Usability: I’m a firm believer in Mastodon’s values. I think it’s better and healthier for people. Because of that, I want to see more people use it. For that to happen, we need to make it more accessible, because the vast majority of people don’t adopt technologies just because they’re open source or because they’re values-aligned. Mastodon needs to be values-driven, open source, and accessible. Android is a great example.
2. Fundraising: Mastodon exists to provide people with a social media platform that is free from ads, algorithms, and corporate control. That’s why we’re in the midst of structural transitions to ensure the platform continues to be stewarded by a not-for-profit foundation. We also need to be financially self-sufficient to deliver on that promise. So cultivating our fundraising is vitally important to our mission.
3. Outreach: To grow Mastodon and the Fediverse, we need to conduct outreach to organizations, governments, or businesses to educate them about the benefit of building communities here. We need to educate potential users about the benefits of building their online social life here. And Mastodon needs to collaborate deeply with other platforms to ensure that users have a rich and seamless experience across the Fediverse.

2025-05-01 16:10:19 UTC

I’m proud to be joining @nprofile…7nr8’s Board of Directors to guide and support this important platform.
I believe that #Mastodon and the #Fediverse represent some of the most important advancements in social networking design and technology. They have the potential to reverse the harms wrought by the monolithic social media platforms of yesterday.
But even more than that, Mastodon and the Fediverse can be so much more than what we are against. We have so much potential. I believe in all of our power to build and change the world. We start by building and convening in healthier online communities because our strength together is far more than the sum of our differences. I believe in building technologies that help bring out the best in humanity; I believe in the amazing things we can do and be when we work together.
I love Mastodon. I love what we are and what we will be. Now let’s build a better world together 💞
