usually people tell me they don't understand symbols. Instead of a plus symbol they would rather have it say 'add new network'. Instead of a power symbol they would rather have it say 'power off'. The thing is if the UI did that then they would complain that there's too much text and they wish it was less cluttered.

It's frustrating that old people tend to expect an exact step by step explanation when they ask you how to do a tech thing, like adding a new wifi network.
'That's in the settings'
'But WHERE in the settings?'
'Probably in a menu called internet or networks or something. You'll find it.'
'And then?'
'And then you probably click on 'add new network' or something like that'
'Probably? Don't you know how this works?'
'It's obvious. Just try it'
I have conversations like this every other week.

My mini PC that I used as a homeserver is suddenly not booting properly. Can somebody tell me if this is a software or a hardware issue? The jumbles output makes me think the GPU broke but I don't know how that would have happened all of a sudden.

I will soon make some double blind taste tests with my family to figure out once and for all if adding a bay leaf to your soup does fuck all. Stay tuned.

Update on my rasberry pi journey: I managed to install something via docker and open a port to access it! Great success! I'm not gonna do anything useful with that for now but I can do it! beep boop computer genius! #linux

There are people on this network who write kernel drivers and stuff and probably dream in C but I want you all to know that I recently learned how to do if statements in bash :flan_cool: So yeah, worship me.

I love it. But I believe in this case it's not 'european', it's 'literally every country except that single stupid one we don't talk about'

I think #sciencefiction writers of the previous century would've been very proud of us if they had known that we are being destroyed by a dystopian, world-encompassing communications network with the slightly ominous name 'the web'.

do you run something like trueNAS on it? Do you do that fancy redundancy thing where a hard drive could fail and you wouldn't lose anything?

maybe a NAS would be my gateway drug and two years later I go full louis rossmann and run my own vpn, mail server and nextcloud. Unlikely but I can dream.

In case anybody is interested: I had to reset the phone and lost quite a lot of my photos and notes. But I will learn from this painful experience by obsessively making backups of EVERYTHING from now on. Pls excuse me while I buy a ton of external hard drives.

My #android phone suddenly refuses to boot 😭 Can you still somehow access the user data when the phone only boots to recovery mode? Help pls, I don't have a backup of my photos #techquestion #techsupport

Why is internxt so cheap, what is going on there?? There must be a catch. They've been offering crazy discounts for so long now.

Have you ever asserted dominance over a lecturer by citing one of their works in your term paper and correcting their typo with [sic]? Powerful move.

Anybody else thinking 'I'd like to take a look at this series but I'm not gonna pay 9€ a month to a streaming service for it to show me ads anyway, spy on me and take it out of their library when whatever contract they made runs out. And the series has never been released on a physical medium so I guess I'll just go fuck myself then'

everything under the pixelfed banner is amazing. Even more so when you realise dansup is basically doing the work of a whole IT department. And it's kinda funny knowing that this account is just dansup calling himself 'we'. lol

This nonsense happened. Before I even try the fix I wanna do a backup. I assume everything is in ~/.var/app/org.signal.Signal ?

it's been two months since I asked that and now the signal flatpak has a catastrophic error that prevents me from opening it :blobcatfacepalm: fml
I don't blame you, of course. But that's just my luck

damn you know your startrek lore xD

2024-09-25 19:06:44 UTC

Dear #youtube recommendations,
I have been watching clips from the various startrek series for the past 20 minutes. What the hell makes you think I would be interested in a video about a talk show moderator complaining about a US politician next?

2024-09-21 11:32:01 UTC

Today I learnt that a German complained that #cyberpunk2077 used the wrong manhole standardisation. It's beautiful.

Tried my first moon cake today because I walked past an asian supermarket that had some. It was nice. Kinda earthy and peanuty. And that was a cheap one, I have to find out if the expensive ones are even better.

Today I learned that DVDs and Blu rays only last about 20 years??
I thought those things were immune to the flow of time! 😭
That means you can't even really use them to archive stuff!

2024-07-12 15:34:09 UTC

Should I trust the #signal flatpak?
(It's not maintained by the signal team itself)
