Yay! This #SolarPunkSunday I just learned that my novella, The Blossoming of the Big Tree, is the #SFFBookClub pick for November, so I'm excitedly waiting to see what discussions come up. It's the story of an old woman who coordinates the defense of her decentralized nation, which thrives in a post capitalist world.
Read a sample and get it here, or in major stores.

This is depressing. Perfectly good alternatives to all Adobe have existed for many years and are used at pro level, but someone hallucinates some code with claude (which I hear was trained on code of programs like gimp and inkscape) and suddenly everyone is raving about it being the end of Adobe, though the thing they praise is at best entry level stuff. But like other snake oil sellers, they claim it will get there, though their "in one month" is now "many months" #artcraft #foss

Life hack. Sprinking salt on a candle increases its lifespan. It burns slower, and longer. I learned this as a kid, growing up with constant loadshedding and candles being a bit too pricey. These days candles are rare as people prefer eletric lights, the harsh blue of phone screens or flat brightness of torches, but there is a charm that candles give, making you think of warmth and solitude.

@nprofile…60xv I figured it out. I found this setting hidden somewhere, Add shortcuts to home screen, and it was disabled. I turned it on and now it works.

I'm trying to add #phanpy as an app on my android phone, RedMi brand, so I tap on the vivaldi icon, tap on "Add page to" and the option that comes is "Home screen." I tap on that and it says Installing, but then, nothing happens. The shortcut doesn't appear on the home screen. Same story with firefox. A fork of firefox, Iron Wolf, woked, but it was unstable. Now I'm forced to use chrome. Any ideas?

After a weekend of literary activities in Kampala, first a book fair and the next day a public book club, I was struck by how much people were demanding for physical books. I priced my ebooks at about half the print book, and they are DRM-free, but not one person opted for the ebook.... I just wish the cost of printing was low enough, and the headache of the process wasn't as painful. Print-on-Demand appears to be a solution but makes books too expensive.

Yesterday, proofs came of my new novella, The Blossoming of the Big Tree, and it got me a bit excited. I have got print copies of my books before, but not one I designed from scratch. I was worried about how the cover would look like, and also because I used LibreWriter for typesetting, if the font was the right one, etc, but it all looks nice and cute. Proud of myself. 😊

Danish journalist held in Uganda "The arrest appears heavily tied to Thymann's environmental activism. During a 2012 expedition, Thymann photographed Rwenzori’s shrinking peaks alongside UWA rangers. Today, my new book comes out, marking my official entry into publishing. Here after I'll put out a book every month.
I wrote this novella to reward those who supported #WindShortFilm but it took a life of its own since the main character, an old woman with social anxiety, has a lot to deal with. She has to coordinate the defense of her tight knit community when a coloniser invades.

Last night at a film festival in Kampala the audience was treated to my film, The Night Dancer, and it was the first public screening in Uganda, where everyone knows stories of this type of character, but glad they enjoyed it. @nprofile…hsl0 Thanks. I do have a pop-filter and a wind-shield, but perhaps I have to learn to use it properly. Or invest in a plugin.
By too fast, you mean the reading/narration?

Need feedback. I narrated a short story to test making audio books, and could use honest opinions on how it sounds, the technical quality, and also reading/narration, or anything that I need to improve before I embark on an actual projects.
I recorded on Audacity with a Rhode NT1 5th Gen, a bright mic, so it needed lots of post-processing in DR Fairlight.
Is it working? Any tips?

For the first time in my life I planted something, an onion that sprout in my kitchen. There were three buds, but only one made it, and now for reasons I can't figure it is dying. It's been out with plenty of sun, and it's been raining a lot, so not sure why dude won't live. There seems to be an ecosystem developing in the tin with smaller plants creeping out.
But next I'm planting flowers. I want some in my bedroom and office.

Need feedback. I'll share stories via @nprofile…0njf but hate that #wordpress has no print-style layout for text, indent first line of, and no space between, paragraphs. (Really, why?) So I convinced someone to join the #fediverse @nprofile…km8e we met recently in Dakar. He is from Mali, speaks mostly French, so it's been interesting having conversations. He got interested after I made a presentation about what works for me as an African artist, having left corporate social media. During the presentation there was a professional interpreter so the point went through. But as we wait for his #introduction post, perhaps someone fluent in #french could welcome and guide him.

Just finished the book. Enjoyable. It is the first book I'm finishing this year. I tried to get into the author's earlier book, Autonomous, but failed to, perhaps because I thought it was a war thing. But this is a thriller of sorts, a time travel book that is themed on editing history, though is a commentary on politics in the US where rights are being rolled back, so perhaps someone is editing our timeline to revert us back to the 1950s.
Very good read!

Sometimes I think my #solarpunk ideas are very original. Decentralized countries. 3D printers manufacturing anything. Biophotovaltic panels that grow in backyards to power homes. And then I read an article like this and I remember that a lot of other writers like me are reacting to our present dilemmas and troubles, and we probably grew up on the same kind of scifi stories so we most likely end up with the same solutions. Does anyone else have songs from artists who perhaps never made it beyond a handful of fans? I have some songs I treasure, got the CDs from the musicians or friends over 10yrs ago, but they've dropped out of the radar and I can't find them anywhere. Just their voice haunting my speakers like a sweet ghost. There's also an mp3 I got off a yahoo group, around 2005. I like the song, but it has no artist name, no title, just a voice and a guitar, perhaps home recorded.

#AI hallucination in #wikipedia is disheartening. This topped a search result (startpage). I at once knew it is false for I've never heard of "Basimba community". It mixes it up with an actual people, the Ngo (leopard) clan of Buganda. Proof of hallucination? It claims to be a Ugandan community but mentions places in Angola, and Portuguese (who never came anywhere close). I've seen other wiki articles of this thing, and also in grok vomit.
Can anyone fix it?

2026-02-01 11:19:29 UTC

Long shot, but hopefully I get results. In the early 2000s, I read a Ugandan newspaper article about two Indian scientists trying to genetically engineer the anopheles mosquito. That set off alarm bells so I wrote a short story, which some universities in UK and Kenya teach in a course Applied African Science Fiction. I've looked for that article but can't find it. I guess it must have been via Reuters or AP or such a newswire.
Anyone think they can dig it up?

So in #Uganda they have found a way to deny internet access if you use vpn? I used to imagine VPN's actually hide you from such things. They banned all social media (but I guess the fediverse is not on their crosshairs either because they don't know about it, or its not ban-able due to the numerous sites? So we've been using VPN but now if you have vpn running you don't get any access. This is frightening.

If you develop for #linux please make offline installation possible, for people in countries with restricted internet. Came back home last night and today I want to install Luminance HDR but their only option for linux is via the terminal, and yet, while I can access full internet on my phone using a VPN, I can't access any on my laptop/workstations, so I can't install this program, unless I use Wine. I'm in #Uganda They cut off internet during elections and it has now been partially restored.

@nprofile…upzx Thanks for this thread, and this map! It would however be nice, when talking of nations, to see that most of the continent was decentralized, but they don't get attention like Ethiopia, Egypt, Mali, Zimbabwe, because we love stories of empires and powerful kings, not those varying forms of direct democracy and communal governance; systems that the colonialist dismissed as anarchic and evidence of primitivity for they equated civilisation with authoritarian rule. And they still do!

Fedi hive mind, I'm writing a story. The MC investigates a Luo folk song (re: oral history, Uganda/South Sudan) that has clues saying 500 yrs ago an astronomer from China visited and documented Luo space travel technologies (portals to the stars). This knowledge is now lost and my MC has to unravel the clues, but what clues could point to China without usung racist stereotypes? Perhaps a word, a name, a description, something?

Excerpt from a book I'm reading, Slow Poison, by Mahmood Mamdani, father of Zorhan Mamdani.
"FBI agents knocked on
my door...they asked what I thought of Marx. I said I had
never met him. Not surprisingly, this Ugandan Muyindi had never heard of Karl
Marx. “He’s dead.”
I said, “I'm sorry, what happened?”
“No, he died long ago.”
I wondered why, then, the question. “Why, then, are you asking me?”
Later, I would remind myself: the FBI introduced me to Karl Marx! "

I can't do a kickstarter since all such platforms only allow creators from particular countries, excluding mine, yet I really want to imagine a future without capitalism and central governments. There are lots of perks for each $$ you can spare!

I'm making a new film, a dark comedy set in a #solarpunk world where direct democracy thrives, no politicians, no central governments, where communities are self-sufficient and help each other to survive the climate crisis. But I need your support to imagine this future.

Oh, and I'm making a new film, a dark comedy in the #solarpunk genre, about a man in an African techno-utopia who is banished from his village for a crime he did not commit. It's the last short I'm doing as target practice before I embark on a feature film next year, and if you have a few coins to spare, please help me figure out how to imagine this future.

If you want it please message me, offer what you think is a fair compensation and pay for shipping (from Uganda, so might be between $50-100, depending on where you are). Or tell someone who you think might want it :-))

Kimuli translates to flower, a thing that is supposed to be beautiful. A symbol of love and cuteness. But since I have an evil mind, I thought of a man turning into a flower monster, and haunting his wife. At least I stayed away from gore, so perhaps there's still some cuteness.
Give it a watch, and a boost if you enjoy it!

I contributed an essay to this book, which is a collection of academic-type writings by Africans who write speculative fiction, on their influences and worldbuilding and such things. I particularly talk about how my research into pre-colonial African cultures inspired me to imagine a future without central governments, where technology has enabled direct democracy. It's now a a Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Finalist!

Last year I met a female biotechnologist, one of the very few in Uganda, researching AIDS. She helped me make my new short film, as I researched, conceptualized and built a bedroom lab capable of gene editing. The film is about a woman who genetically engineers a butterfly in a bedroom lab, turning it into an assassin to kill political opponents of a dictator.
Last week, she, suddenly, lost her job after a dictator in the US cut all foreign aid. Her research on AIDS 100% depends on US aid.

I'm hoping to use Raspberry Pi 5 to train filmmakers, but I have trouble installing apps. I particularly want KIT Scenarist/Starc (screenwriting), Audacity (audio editing), Kdenlive (video editing) and Gimp or Krita for photo editing. But looks like I have to be online to install anything, and with our slow internet, it will be a pain to do this in 8 or 10 machines. Anyone with ideas? #raspberry #kdenlive #krita #filmmaker

Yes!! Finally got a good news call, a grant to make a live action short film, meaning I can think about working with a more experienced vfx artist using #blender rather than do it myself. Its a rush-rush job as the money people want the film ready by 1st November. But I'm thinking of manageable vfx, involving butterflies mating and fire-breathing birds. And a bush catching fire. Maybe there is a zombie in the mix?
Uhm, anyone wants to discuss this?

I have so many short story ideas, but I write only the first paragraph and just can't continue, yet the entire story is sitting there in my head anxious to come out. Because I've thought so much about the story that I know how it starts, how it ends, who the main characters are, but I can't get it out of my head..... Not sure how to get out of this state. It's been going for about a month now 😭

According to research by the Havard School of Futurism, by 2030 bananas will officially be called bananum, and strawberries will be strawberrum, because the Large Lying Models will make us believe these are the right words. The researchers quoted Aristotle who said "If you tell a lie three times while drinking a town's water supply, it will become the truth."
