The average engineering tradeoff involves purely technical concerns like “this PL has certain characteristics” or “this database will/won’t handle our data access patterns at scale”.
This tradeoff involves willingly looking the other way at blatant “scraping FLOSS off the internet and charging access to it” and so on.
but then we’re facing the old, increasingly tired ‘no such thing as ethical consumption’ canard re: “I see you’re typing this on a computer, which are not ethically made”.
So go off, I guess.

Broadly, I thought my values (multiple) were more widely shared than they appear to be.
To be fair, yes, there has always been a big spectrum of "programmers" from the ivoryest tower academic to "it's literally just a job and I never think about it before 9 or after 5, never engage with anyone but coworkers, etc".
But prior to the current situation, there was this sense that "the community" - the folks who show up at confs, on social media or forums/MLs, etc - was a continuum with the "bell" of the curve spanning mostly the middle and left side of that spectrum. (Obviously, if one took "literally all programmers" as the set, the distribution would heavily skew towards the workaday.)
Recent events appear to be showing that the distribution was a lot more rightward slanted than I'd believed, or at least that it's much more bumpy (which is probably the more accurate framing, many overlapping such humps).

it's more concern than contempt, and I'm specifically saying these tools are what's ethically compromised, not necessarily their users.
(Though...it's a problem that I'm not sure how else to frame a lot of this, other than ethics or a willingness to relax them.)
If I'm coming across strongly then I apologize: I am feeling incredibly put upon by so, so many people lately, both explicitly and implicitly, and it is utterly bewildering and upsetting. I do not even have the words to express all of this, much less make a cogent defense.

I think the main difference is that PHP wasn't quite so ethically compromised, causing folks to lose their minds and skills, or building up an enormous and probably fraudulent market bubble.
Like, yet again, a discussion about this tech is acting like it is "just a tool".

tbh I think Sumana is kind of on point, if the folderol is what I think it is (ppl wanting to label slop as slop).
Namely that what we thought was one community (programmers) is really two communities (programmers who give a shit, and those who don't), with the former group viewing (rightly or wrongly) calling-out of slop, a defense of (their half of) the community.

Claude Code (bear with me) has all these dumb little gewgaws & animations & "sorta slick, sorta annoying" TUI behaviors – none of this shit is germane to its use case.
However! The overall effect seems precisely like the AV presentation of casino games - their barrage of flashing lights, noises, and music. It tickles your lizard hindbrain, a constant pitter-patter of dopamine hits.
Those are literally designed to be attention-grabbing, focus-keeping & habit-forming, by (evil) psychologists. One imagines the same is true with chatbot UIs.
(Thoughts brought to you by my daily "what inane, mostly metatextual questions can I ask Claude Code so I don't get fired for zero usage statistics" meditation. Today's has been investigating if you can turn any of this shit off. Answer: of course not.)

One hilarious thing about flashlight shopping is all of the marketing images showing applications of the now-common magnetic base/tailcaps.
Do hunters and other outdoorsy types _really_ find utility out of attaching their flashlight to their axe/knife/machete blade?

2026-08-07 19:14:32 UTC

I don't /need/ another flashlight. I could just reallocate one of the many other flashlights in the house, to the currently flashlight-less basement. It's not like I'm not walking around with a decently bright emergency light built into my smartphone.
And yet. And yet…

FTR, most helicopter flyovers I experience seem to be one of a few common groups:
- medivac flights to one of the two medical centers I live between
- rich assholes flying back to a local municipal from their vacation house in the Hamptons
- military assets on their way to/from Fort Dix in #CentralJersey #NewJersey (which exists!)
So this one was pretty unique, especially after it flew over like 3 times in rapid succession…

Leonardo AW139 helicopter flying all over northern #NewJersey this evening, including lots of loops over various towns (including like 3 loops around downtown Madison).
No ID or flight plan in FlightAware, the very brief glimpse I got looked vaguely police or military (gray and blue paint).
Wonder wtf. VIP sightseeing? (Of... Madison, Hillsdale, Cliffside Park, and Springfield? Really?) Police heli training flight? NNSA nuclear detection mission?

Idly wondering how folks who are deep into personal web archiving (i.e. keeping full clones of pages or sites they've bookmarked) handle sharing those snapshots with friends or the general public, especially in this age of abusive bot scrapers.
Guessing the answer is "keep it all behind lock and key, and deal with the friction that represents on both ends"? Maybe some form of ephemeral/unguessable/unlisted sharing URL? (and obviously, bespoke tactics like Anubis.)
I'm putting the cart before the horse here, obviously, as I don't even have ArchiveBox or w/e set up yet 😅

did you just skip over pyenv or something? (Contrary to the name, its main purpose is actually to build Python interpreters 😂)

My feed is going to be significantly quieter once botsin.space goes away. Not even sure how to contact half the bot maintainers to find out where (if) they move to new homes.

Sure, why not! though I assume most will fall under “suck it up, buy some groceries and cook something in big batches that reheats easily” 🫠

Basically everything I could reasonably get for lunch that isn't labor-intensive cook-your-own-from-farm-to-table-ingredients is one of
a) bad for me (red meat, pizza, lots of processed grains, etc)
b) recently likely to contain E. coli or Listeria (salad veggies, deli meat, chicken)
c) something I'm already eating a lot of and am pretty sick of (fish, tofu)
Makes it super easy to end up in a low blood sugar analysis paralysis spiral!

TBF a lot of that stuff varies widely by state. My ballot this year was under a dozen standard federal/state/county offices plus one ignorable-for-me municipal BoE thing. Vs California where it was a lot of random stuff including all the propositions.

I'm over here just trying to find a server/devbox operating system whose sticker I would not feel faintly embarrassed to display. Like, those certainly exist, but do they also exhibit the technical properties I'm currently looking for? Who knows!
Turns out being happy is a privilege.

Must be nice to not know, or care, about pesky little things like ethics. You get to shop literally anywhere! Use any software you like! No bad feelings!

The thing that bugs me the most about "#AI" in the #LLM age is that a bunch of presumably intelligent people heard the Bullshit Asymmetry Principle:
> The amount of energy needed to refute bullshit is an order of magnitude bigger than that needed to produce it.
And said to each other: "ok, but what if we made that into MULTIPLE orders of magnitude?! 🤩"

Kind of annoyed how dosing instructions for drugs are all “if you missed a dose and it’s almost time for your next dose, don’t double up” but nobody ever quantifies what “almost” means here. Like, is it safe to take a twice a day drug only 8h apart sometimes instead of 12h? Big shrug!

Still registered to vote 💪🏻
If you live in a democracy: don't forget to double-check /your/ voter registration periodically too! Shenanigans abound.

Any y'all mutuals involved in the `uv` discussion which branches off the below toot, planning to blog about it?
I've been taking notes and might write it up as a(n objectively framed) post, but don't want to duplicate too much work 😅

This is a super cool #BlueSky feature that I honestly wonder /if/ it could work on the #Fediverse? But edits, etc function seemingly fine here so I assume this would too?
Sure, minor chance for 'drift' as the detach event chases down the original post event, but again…we use edits all the time which would have the same property.
The point about binary thinking is spot-on, anyway.

God DAMN but does iOS need per-app volume controls 😵
Every single time:
- put on podcast while I mow the lawn, at maybe 75% volume because spoken word + lawnmower
- 18 hours, including a couple hours' sleep, pass
- "ok time to put on some background music while I try to work”
- AAAAAHHHHHHHHH SO LOUD WTF
