Collective punishment is a war crime.
Excerpt: Israeli troops have levelled a neighbourhood in Hebron, driving out hundreds of families in collective punishment for a militant attack on an army checkpoint outside the West Bank city, local Palestinian authorities said.
The Hebron municipality estimated that 35 hectares (86 acres) had been destroyed or marked for destruction and about 1,500 people had been evicted from their homes by Saturday afternoon in the district of Ein Deir Baha. The whole city of 250,000 people was sealed off by checkpoints on every point of entry.

I just received this press release from the Tohono O'odham Nation by email and am reprinting it here in its entirety, as it is clear that the US federal government has crossed all lines and is violating the TO Nation's tribal sovereignty:
=======================================
Press Release
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2026
ARMED FEDERAL AGENTS AND CONTRACTORS ENTER
TOHONO O’ODHAM NATION LAND, SET UP VEHICLE BLOCKADE
Tribal Members Urged to Stay Vigilant, Avoid Escalation, and Prioritize Personal Safety
SELLS, Ariz. – On Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2026, at 4:00 a.m., border wall contractors and approximately 20 masked, armed Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents from the Tucson Sector entered the Tohono O’odham Nation land and began engaging in pre-construction activities. The contractors, who are on the Nation illegally, were accompanied by agents as they worked on three different locations near the border with drill trucks to conduct soil sampling and other activities.
This is in direct violation of the Tohono O’odham Code, Title 4, Chapter 2, “Civil Trespass; Removal and Exclusion of Nonmembers.” Tribal leadership previously warned unauthorized individuals attempting to access the Nation that they would be in violation of this trespassing law. Tohono O’odham Police Department (TOPD) officers were on the scene Tuesday morning and have been monitoring the situation.
In addition to the CBP agents, multiple BIA officers and a CBP BORTAC SWAT Team have been deployed to the Nation to protect the contractors, and a tethered balloon is being used by federal
authorities for enhanced monitoring. TOPD has been unable to issue citations due to a vehicle blockade set up by CBP. In addition, in coordination with U.S. authorities, Mexican police have been deployed to the southern side of the border to protect the areas while the border wall contractors are working.
Interactions between TOPD and federal authorities have remained peaceful and professional.
“These illegal actions by border wall contractors puts decades of successful partnership in jeopardy,” said Chairman Verlon M. Jose, Chairman of the Tohono O’odham Nation. “As the federal government knows, effective border security relies on modern technology, not outdated and expensive static border
walls. This overreach by the Trump Administration must stop, and our sovereignty, along with tribal sovereignty across the country, must be respected.”
Drone footage of Tuesday’s illegal activities is available at https://www.tonation-nsn.gov.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/jun/23/prairieland-ice-protesters-texas-sentenced
I expect we will learn much more about this case (and the decision of Texas prosecutors to pursue such an extreme treatment of this case), but based on what we know so far:
1. One of the defendants (the one who fired his weapon at law enforcement) did commit a serious crime, but 100 years in prison is NOT an appropriate punishment for someone who did not kill anybody.
2. Some of the other defendants committed property damage, which is also a crime, but should NOT result in decades of prison time.
3. Some of the defendants committed no act of violence or even property damage, yet were given decades in prison, as discussed in the excerpt below:
"Prosecutors in the case charged and secured conviction of eight of the nine defendants for providing material support for terrorists. The ninth defendant, Daniel Sanchez-Estrada was not at the protest, but was convicted of corruptly concealing a document or record after prosecutors said he moved leftwing zines and other materials at the request of Rueda, his wife, after she was arrested. Sanchez-Estrada was sentenced to 30 years in prison on Tuesday.
“I worked really hard every day in this country, and I believe in human rights and helping others in need. I donate money and art to help animals and other people … I’m a father, a husband and a teacher. But I’m not a terrorist,” Sanchez-Estrada said in court before his sentencing."

Random reflection on #ShavuotLive hour #9, Chava Shapiro's presentation "Pikuach Nefesh (Saving a Life) and the Moral Work of Jewish Law" was a very helpful presentation, digging into the history of the principle of Pikuach Nefesh (PK).
PK is interesting because it was pretty much a universal ethical principle (which overrode almost all mitzvot in importance) with little if any dissent, but also was a principle that is arguably post-Biblical.
I also appreciated Chava's response to my question about doing activism on #Shabbat.

I’m making this post because I don’t what else to do.
I’m looking for James Mast, a son of Moses Mast (my dear friend and mentor who recently passed away). If you are James or you know how to get in touch with him, please contact me (jmb.mx/contact) , as I want to make sure James can attend the memorial service (even if it has to be remote) but also for some other important issues.
FYI, James was last known to be in Cornwall, Ontario (see https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/sixties-scoop-immigration-1.7541323 ) , but I haven’t had any luck tracking him down.

Since it is Shabbat I'm going to keep my remarks brief..
1. Preemptive US military attacks without Congression approval violate the US constituion.
2. Preemptive attacks by the USA and the state of Israel violate the UN charter, a treaty that both countries have signed.
3. The Iranian regime has done terrible things, but as always, it will be the civilians of all sides that will be suffering thanks to this idiotic war.
4. The state of Israel's decision to participate in this attack is a terrible, terrible thing, which will result in Jewish people around the world being blamed. The folly of doing this during the Jewish holiday of purim, and the Islamic holiday of Ramadan compounds this terror. Contrary to what many mainstream Jewish institutions have told us, the state of Israel is not making life safer or better for Jews in diaspora, but rather it is empowering anti-semites to behave worse and get away with it.

Besides, our regular Shabbat service, we will also have a special speaker. Here's more info about it:
This service will be followed by a talk by Dr. Marcos Bazmandegan on his recent book which explores the life and thought of Uriel da Costa, a Sephardic Jew of Portuguese origin, presenting him as an intellectual precursor of Spinoza and the author of the first major critique of Rabbinic Judaism prior to the Theological-Political Treatise. It examines his life of exile, his break with religious orthodoxy, and his defense of reason, individual conscience, and ethical humanism, placing his ideas within the broader context of the Sephardic diaspora. At the same time, the book serves as a reflection on Sephardism, secularism, and Jewish Humanism, portraying Uriel da Costa as a powerful symbol of intellectual resistance and freedom of thought.

Excerpt: WORCESTER – Agencies within the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) and Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) intend to implement a comprehensive plan to target Spanish-speaking churches across the country during the upcoming holiday season between Thanksgiving, Nov. 27, and Christmas, Dec. 25.
Three U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) attorneys, including one assigned to the U.S. Attorney’s office in the district of Massachusetts, one to the district of Rhode Island office, and the third posted at an office in New York told This Week in Worcester they received briefings on the plan.
The attorney in the Massachusetts office said that they attend a Baptist church in Massachusetts and is a registered Republican. He said that he does not see how this plan is in line with either American values or Biblical doctrine.
The attorney in the Rhode Island office confirmed both the briefing and internal discussions about the legal issues surrounding arrests at churches over the past three months.
The attorney in the New York office spoke in depth about the plan being recently updated to include mosques and liberal synagogues in the wake of Zohran Mamdani’s recent win in the New York City mayor’s race.
The attorneys spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of retribution. All three said the plan is not regional to New England, but a nationwide strategy.

And of course ---Congress had to sneak this in.
Ironic, given all of the tech bros who kept claiming that Trump was going to open up the Cannabis industry. So much for that.
The practical effect of this is that veterans and others with PTSD, anxiety, and related issues and who depend on hemp-derived THC products in states like #Texas are going to be deprived soon of their needed medicine.

I've been a long-time fan of Dr. Bronner's soap, but reading their latest annual "All-One" report has definitely solidified those feelings. Here are a few things worth noting (most of these facts are pulled from the report, but some are from other sources):
1. They buy 90% of the olive oil (used as an ingredient in many of their products) from Palestinian farmers in the #WestBank.
2. They use 100% renewable generated power in their production facilities.
3. They are transitioning away from plastic refill bottles and instead using wax-paper cartons. (with a much lower environmental footprint).
4. They gave a lot of money to some good causes --about 2% of their REVENUE (not profits).
5. They are major customers of many, many #organic farmers in the US and around the world.
6. The company is unapologetic about supporting #DEI Principles.
7. Their highest-paid executive is paid around 5 times what their lowest-paid full-time, fully vested employee is paid --- which means the CEO makes a little over $200k a year. (most companies pay their CEO's hundreds of times what the rank and file are paid)
8. The company played a big role in supporting the growth of the industrial #hemp industry (decades before it hit the mainstream), when it switched to using hemp oil in place of the ubiquitous "caramel color" in its products.
9. The company still shares the #Jewish / #Univeralistic teachings of the original Dr. Bronner on its labels, who started his soap company as a way to share his teachings about the importance of love, tolerance and #peace.
10. The products have so many uses.

I am deeply relieved that #Biden changed his mind and pardoned #HunterBiden.
But in light of the fascist coming to office in January, he needs to do many more pardons, such as:
1. Pardoning all members of the US #Military who committed absence offenses (#AWOL, desertion, missing movement, etc.) during the years of the wars in #Iraq and #Afghanistan
2. Pardoning all US political prisons, most notably #LeonardPeltier,
3. Pardoning all senior members of his administration (including the Vice President) of any "crimes" related to their official duties (using the logic of SCOTUS)
After that, I recommend that he himself resign from office, making #KamalaHarris our first female US President. And of course, she can then pardon Joe Biden.
I hate that this #3 is necessary, but that is the world we live in under the Trump #SupremeCourt. Until the rules are changed, progressives should not hold back any metaphorical punches.

Question for tech folks --- I have a mastodon account that lives on a server that I pay for hosting for. I've used it for quite awhile (with 2500 posts), but I would like to actually shut down that server (and save the $13/month) --- but I don't want to lose the content I've posted there.
I've done a backup of the profile for my main account here, but of course there is no good way to take that backup and do anything with it (it looks like the actual posts are in a JSON file).
I've also tried just copying and pasting from the profile itself, which gets me the content but for some weird reason leaves off the dates of posts.
I've also tried using archive.today and archive.org, but neither will work either to capture the past posts well.
There must be an easier way to do this. Any ideas?
FYI - the content I'm trying to archive is at @npub13a8…e6k9
