ICE BEARD!!
Ok, so it's a bit on the colder side, here, with "feels like" temps of -36C (I guess -34F ?), which, of course, means that there's a gorgeous sun! I couldn't resist. Nice ~5km run for today.

I did not and it put a smile on my face, in this cold and gray and rainy day! 🙏

I did similar, actually... or maybe more in the middle. But I never got too hot, so I think I aimed correctly.

the challenge for me is to dress for that, but also for 15C at the end of the same run. There's going to be some incomfort, you've got to choose.
28C is hotter than optimal, that's for sure. I think my preference for optimal would be between 10 and 15C.

hahaha I thought you'd say so.
Some people around me apparently agree with you!

The sun is rising on #montreal and the Jean-Drapeau park is packed! I think I heard that 17000 runners were expected.
It is still cold, though. 5C.

I think there's a fine line to walk on, though. Consistency is usually associated with health. But yeah, there is such a thing as too much volume.

Today I brought the kids to Funtropolis, aka a place where kids play in elaborate modules and adults try to bear the noise.
When we got back home, I went out for a nice 10km, all by myself, as a treat after the morning. But it was hotter than I thought (we almost reached 30C).
Now I'm exhausted, but I think it's the noise from this morning that got me the most. My god this was intense.

Sebastian's advice is great, but going in a slightly different way, I do many of my runs in zone 2. This pace keeps you in aerobic mode.
I've heard that the benefits are about "building the aerobic engine". It allows you to run more with lower risk of injury (this assumes: low pace = lower risk of injury).
Coupling that with some speed work supposedly helps you for your next goal.
I can say that for me, it works great. But yes, at first, it might mean some walking.

Today I did a 12-hour walk. Besides stopping for eating and some occasional pauses (for the sunrise, seen through the clouds from the top of the Mont-Royal), I walked.
I don't know the distance, but I see that I did 55.3k steps today. It might me my higher count of all days, including marathon days!
It made me tremendous good on my mental health. It is inspired by a very inspiring story: Colin O'Brady. Read here:

I have the immense privilege to be able to have the best workout schedule:
I wake up early(ish) and I do a small bout of work. Next is the routine with the kids, and when they are off to school, I can go run or go to the gym. This way is consistent, allow the gym to be opened when it's strength day and I run after my coffee with the sun!
Long runs on the weekends are actually much harder to fit in, but I always find a way.

Very November-like weather today for my #run, which is reassuring! Just flirting with freezing point (there was an alert for freezing rain but it looks like we avoided it).
My fingers were frozen at the end of my 10km. (I made the mistake to have cotton gloves, they were soaked with the rain!)
No picture, but it was cloudy, dark, raining, cold... and I loved it! It felt so good to be out there #running !

2024-11-19 10:47:45 UTC

I rarely run during the afternoon, but today was an exception. (I so much prefer running in the morning)
Still a very enjoyable run (and a very enjoyable break from work)
Though, I experienced something really weird in my right foot. Let's see how it evolves. 🧐😨
And for some reason, my cadence was much slower than usual, which I also find strange.

I'm with you on the atrocity of the hate that just won.
I'm glad you're taking care of yourself.
Just don't forget that stress is stress, no matter the source (like an Monday morning marathon or the victory of all that is monstrous and disastrous). So it's not a bad idea to take some load off your physical training while digesting the mental strain.
And... I say that, but I would run 100km per day every day just so I don't lose my mind over the news. 🤷‍♂️

2024-11-09 19:54:30 UTC

Pretty nice Saturday long run! It was almost long enough to get the week out of my mind...
there are still nice colours, temperatures are (normal) still pretty good...

I do the same. I'm not sure if my old and afraid or careful. I choose careful in my mind.
Also, todays trail price me right (to be slow, even walk some segments). Leaves on the ground could hide the trail, roots, rocks, holes, or even a combination of those...

I was relieved to read much of the book: I feel like the race to better recovery is simpler.
One thing I felt was too... narrow? Some of the techniques described have benefits outside of recovery. For example, cold exposure has been studied in depth and it has value.
Not for recovery, perhaps, but benefits nevertheless.
Not nuancing some arguments made me feel less confident in some other arguments, personally.

Sur Beaubien y a aussi La Boulette comme resto que j'affectionne particulièrement (leurs tartares sont vraiment bons).

Update on my #running :
My foot is slightly improving, but my god is it long.
I wanted to do 10km this morning, I could 8, walk/running the last one.
I have been wearing my old Altras, following good advices from here. It helped at first, then gave me pain in other areas of my foot.
I have a 5km run with my 7 yr-old next Saturday. I'm good for that. The next day, though, is the half and I don't know if my foot will allow me that distance.
And 2 weeks after that, a marathon... 😩

Fun fact. I wanted to try pool running. I pick a time that says "adult swimming" (and that doesn't conflict with meetings at work, of course). I ask the first life guard I meet. She says, sure why not, go there and here's a floating device. I go there, enter the water, and sure enough, a second lifeguard tells me that it's against the rules. 🤦‍♂️

I just did a swimming training session yesterday, to continue doing some kind of workout while my stupid foot tries to recover.
After about 40 minutes I was done. For a meeting, yes, but doing lanes in a pool is not that exciting. I miss the outside!!! Being free in the city and go places!
So I admire your patience as well as your endurance! 🤣

My feelings exactly

2024-08-12 20:45:31 UTC

Stages I go through when I have a running injury:
1. Trying to run through the pain
2. Pain doesn't disappear magically, taking some rest
3. Accepting rest, so long it's < 1 week
4. On the 8th day, raging in despair that it'll never go away.
5. My life sucks and I'm stuck at this stage forever. Will I ever run again??
6. 😭😭
7. Start running again, progressively, feeling anxious that it might not be totally solved.
8. Running as if it never happened
Currently at step 5...
