Fascinating story from WW II.

"Studies across the tree of life are finding that genome duplication isn’t exactly an infrequent occurrence. Among plants, it’s hard to avoid, said Jonathan Wendel, an evolutionary biologist at Iowa State University: All seed plants living today have experienced at least one ancient whole-genome duplication, and many have undergone more. Barnacles, insects, trout, and arachnids carry evidence of ancient duplications in their genomes."

The cell is not alive by any definition. […] But it’s the strongest demonstration yet that it is possible to generate life from nonlife, a goal that synthetic biologists have been chasing for decades."

In celebration of Sir David Attenborough's 100th birthday, I went back in time to the first observation I posted to iNaturalist. This is a genus Choreutis moth spotted at Coney Island, Singapore on 18 Dec 2015.

"Researchers recently asked volunteers to look at photographs of these knots and decide which would take more force to undo. The participants consistently misjudged the strength of the ties by wide margins, Johns Hopkins University brain science researchers Chaz Firestone and Sholei Croom report in the journal Open Mind."

"Our researchers tested market-leading consumer AI tools – ChatGPT, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Google Gemini - by giving them access to the BBC News website, and asked them to answer one hundred basic questions about the news, prompting them to use BBC News articles as sources.
The results? The team found ‘significant issues’ with just over half of the answers generated by the assistants."

"I recently found out that novelizations of the first two Godzilla movies, published in 1955 as part of a series of books for younger readers, had been translated and republished in an omnibus edition by University of Minnesota Press in 2023. [...] Not only did it give me a greater appreciation for the stories, but there is a long afterword that offers a lot of history and context regarding the development of the stories and the two films."

"While Singapore does not require doctors to report tick bites or tick-borne diseases, a recent study has learnt that all 11 species of ticks found to have bitten humans in the island-state between 2002 and 2023 are capable of carrying one or more harmful microbes."

"A new ecological haven is set to take shape in northern Singapore as the Mandai Mangrove and Mudflat Nature Park opens progressively from 2028.
Situated roughly 3km to the east of Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, the new park will provide a vital sanctuary for biodiversity and expand the Sungei Buloh Nature Park Network"

A forest in the middle of a shopping district.
"[H]ere, in the overgrown no man’s land bordered by Orchard Turn, Orchard Boulevard and Orchard Link, there is only the brief fluttering of wings and swaying of branches.
It is a curious space: a rare parcel of prime real estate, left untouched since the 1950s, in a country where liminal spaces are often pulverised by pragmatism."

TIL: there are numbers that cannot be computed.
"In order to calculate the Chaitin constant exactly, you would have to know which programs hold and which do not—which is not possible, according to the [halting] problem. [M]athematician Cristian Calude and his colleagues succeeded in calculating the first several digits of the Chaitin constant, 0.0157499939956247687..., it will never be possible to find all decimal places."

I'm familiar with that Wayang Kulit Superman. It's the work of Tintoy Chuo and Fusion Wayang Kulit. I believe they started with Wayang Kulit versions of the Star Wars characters.

I suppose no time better than the present, on Singapore's Independence Day. I've put up a website for my book, magazine and on-line fiction reviews. It currently covers what I've read from the present back to 2019, with further back-dated reviews (my Goodreads reviews) to be added from time to time.
The reviews are simple markdown formatted text files. They are hosted on Github with Github Pages being used to generate the final HTML files.
