if you bust out a pen and paper and draw ur desired ui to swish swish the media
I’ve actually had “present an archive” collection on my roadmap and already have an assortment of esoteric media players in silly, so I’d like to match ur desired reality
Or I can just dealers choice it, but I’m down to collab if you are

I mean what bit do you want to take on?
You’ve seen inside the machine, I mostly just reconfigure it based on need.
The problem is vastly more social than technical, so the solution to taking on Instagram’s dominance is stealing the original idea that made Instagram Instagram
Pilgrammers
Pilgrammers was a marketing campaign by instagram to pay for trips for the most active instagram posters back in the early days.
I had friends that essentially were Instagram before Instagram— random college friends in Virginia.
Instagram needed a realistic and natural quality to it, so the initial seed content was high quality, highly personal, evolutions of “this is how I see the world”
So, I’m down to make a reality cult if you want to truly take them on.
We could even score some of the earliest Pilgrammers which will fire up the nostalgia engines of the people that lived Instagram v1, like the organic growth influencers before “the meta”

I’ve been in a lot of rooms where people are saying “we need to disentangle what ai means” because it’s become an overly conflated term and I also leaned into describing every technology that’s not open source in the classical sense as AI
I know that’s problematic for people trying to sell being both open and ai, but it’s a distinction that most non tech people actually appreciate.
If it is not AI, I’m able to break it into the component parts and we can all look at them and talk about them objectively
If it is AI, they’re starting to say it’s “too dangerous for non technical people” and I’m applauding everyone seeing those red flags as red flags.

it is both, but if we’re truly advocating for personal compute, we should be reframing the argument to be “can I hold it” or “does it hold me”
I see where you’re coming from but most people on this planet are upset with the surveillance state and data centers and taking it out on AI is the only lever they feel they have

i'll try it out and let you know! before i get to it, i guess i'll drop this too-- for the public reverse proxy piece i'm using caddy like this:
https://caddyserver.com/docs/quick-starts/reverse-proxy
architecture is a digital ocean droplet running caddy
then from my phone i connect to it via
ssh -N -R 1998:localhost:1024 local.$USER.me
with my user name tychi, my personal phone is offline right now, but goes live at https://local.tychi.me/ after running that

it’s really good
I’ve front my personal site publicly from my personal phone running graphene as a demo
Stack is
Flash Graphene, install F-droid, install termux, install proot-distro, install your Linux flavor of choice, clone your repo, reverse ssh tunnel to wherever the domain points
I should try the latest version of kitten because it’s been a while, but I’m confident kitten would run no problem there
Happy to share any graphene experience— I flashed before you could do it just through chrome but I’m throughly impressed with how seamless they’ve made flashing a device

Look, the obsession with pronunciation of technology before understanding the technology is why most people don’t care
If correct pronunciation is important, don’t name projects with cheeky puns in shorthand

Congratulations @npub1ftl…3e6s and everyone else at the @npub1umd…wfr7
Well done and I’m appreciative personally of the openness of the archive to understand how to scale a library to trillions of creations.
The easy answer I witnessed was this technical approach called “a circle”— which let even the tiniest mouths be heard by the biggest ears.
You have succeeded where many have failed due to triangles.

hypertext is not a programming language cried the "engineer" from beneath "create react app" as they "simped" at "elon" while their "typescript" "compiled" to hypertext

i was about to post yet another dark thoughts post and i deleted it
and i delete content before i post it all the time and the filter is generally
"this is important to share, because i wrote it. i will not share it because this is not who i want to be known as and we are what we post online, online"
so i'm going to pivot this into a sales pitch and say this is a problem my memex solves
if we start joining on dark thoughts, we can stop spamming the public feed and we can start coalescing themes and facts, instead of screaming into the void
difference between traditional social media and memex is that the social context is more audit log and permissions, e.g. unix, than it is "look at me"

if i had one piece of advice for aspiring software engineers it would be this
use a computer where the fan doesn't run with "typical" workloads. you'll immediately know when you introduce a performance bug since you'll be able to hear it.
i'm running the framework with an i5 and this little fan helps me every day.

writing software is primarily content design, otherwise the mantra wouldn't be "naming variables is the hardest thing in programming"

don’t get me wrong, i’ve over explained here as much as the rest of us, i mean, probably likely more, but my conclusion is that people generally don’t care for a lecture and anything beyond “like twitter but i like the people i cross paths with more” is going to be met with a dose of “not how you hoped the conversation would go”

re: lobsters
https://lobste.rs/s/zmnr01/how_decentralized_is_bluesky_really
re: “bluesky won” because of “superior ux”
bluesky intelligently didn’t try and solve two problems simultaneously
the two components of any digital product are infrastructure, the actual technical bits, and the expectations, the why anyone should rely on any given infrastructure.
the biggest failure of activity pub is our collective inability to define expectations
i wouldn’t argue bluesky has better ux than activity pub, but i would argue that building a 1:1 interface to twitter made it so the expectations match and the big, big point here is that
people really do not care about infrastructure as long as their expectations meet reality.
activity pub spaces spend way, way too much energy attempting to persuade people’s expectations to be different, but the easier answer is
just build a twitter clone? i know mastodon is twitter inspired and tech savvy people can navigate any ui, but the majority of people are trained on expectations that should be pretty apparent when you put twitter and bluesky side by side and squint.
if you want here to win and bluesky makes you sad, maybe just make a twitter clone and not a twitter fork and the people you want to understand here, will actually get it without an explanation, for the first time ever.

i want to drive home how much c code is required for windows, mac, linux, etc to achieve what css does while asleep

2024-11-18 03:55:31 UTC

my favorite thing about writing an os in js is that all the actually challenging problems get solved in css
the js is the same pattern. spit html on state change and spit state change on event handlers all events are driven by user interaction where the css chooses when interactions are available based on the current document

for anyone advocating non microsoft and non apple and non google and non amazon computing alternatives
please study abcde
that is the best piece of software
i haven no idea how it works and i don't care
i plug in an external cd/dvd drive. i load a cd. i run abcde and it manually walks me through ripping and syncing track information with very little input
it is a workflow that streamlines cultural, social, and technical boundaries
"want to digitize that album? abcde"
run those letters.
