@nprofile…h0ux This morning I woke up in a panic at 5:30a because I dreamt you messaged me “I’m at the Grand Hotel in Budapest, where are you?” and I had to check I didn't somehow misled you about my whereabouts as I was in New Jersey all week-end!

@nprofile…9q72 Yeah, as an addon developer you get to define your own templates instead of overriding existing ones from the core. It can also be used for specific addon screen. Glad I could help!

2026-08-18 20:20:34 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…9q72 Let's see, you would have to write something like this:
function bookface_custom_footer(string &$body)
{
$t = Renderer::getMarkupTemplate('footer.tpl', 'addon/bookface');
$html = Renderer::replaceMacros($t, [
'$global_font' => DI::pConfig()->get($uid, 'bookface_custom', 'global_font');
...
]);
$body .= $html;
}
And then the template file itself:
<style type="text/css">:root{
{{if $global_font}}--global-font-family: {{$global_font}};{{/if}}
...
}</style>
And now it doesn't matter what people put in the global_font config value, it should be escaped in the output.

@nprofile…9q72 Looking at the bookface_custom_footer code from your repository, I'd encourage you to create a template in your addon where you build the custom CSS tag using variable interpolation. This way you don't have to care about sanitization, it will be taken care of by Smarty and you won't have to do this kind of risky string concatenation.
If an addon allows admin to add custom CSS/JS then it would have to allow user input as is in such a footer hook, but it isn't the case for your addon where config values govern individual CSS keys, which means it can be taken care of by a template.

2026-08-18 12:29:33 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…9q72 Did you use template variable interpolation?

2026-08-18 02:58:33 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…9q72 Code is only malicious when it's retrieved and displayed. This is why all template variables are escaped by default. This way even malicious HTML/Javascript entered into config files will be displayed as is in a template variable interpolation.
Malicious code is harmless in the database itself. Malicious code that would targets the database like SQL injection is handled separately by using bound variables during requests, so no user-supplied values (or any other, for that matter) is ever treated as part of the query itself.
Sanitization is a neverending whack-a-mole game while blanket escaping and SQL bound variables are once and done solutions.

@nprofile…t566 I'm with you but the Friendica project has a long and extensive history with GitHub dating back before the Microsoft acquisition, and now a migration to any other platform, let alone the one we are maintaining for ourselve, is proving difficult because of the long history of the repo.

@nprofile…m72t See, I didn’t know what Google Jules was, so I looked it up. You submitted by yourself the entire Friendica codebase which has been authored by dozens of different contributors to a commercial tool running in the cloud where you have no idea what it will be further used and monetized for that whatever you got out of it.
This is the attitude issue I mentioned earlier. The rationalization that one’s use of AI can’t be bad because it doesn’t feel bad, regardless of anyone otherwise involved in this use.

2026-07-29 19:32:47 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…m72t It would, but the project is understaffed for both code and documentation. I’m grateful that you asked the question about AI usage though.

2026-07-29 19:21:55 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…m72t Yes, it really isn’t about the code itself, but about the attitude. One of the fundamental pillars of open source software collaboration is trust between each other humans. Unfortunately, at this point AI is eroding that trust for a number of reasons, which I’ll be happy to list and develop if you’re interested.

2026-07-29 12:13:23 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…m72t Please don’t put words in my mouth. I said that AI use casts doubt on the contributor themselves, not on the code. The latter will always be reviewed on its own merits, and we’ve had terrible pull requests in the past that were entirely authored manually. However, when we spent time pointing out the code shortcomings, we had good hope that the contributor would learn and improve. Not just for our project’s sake, but in general.
I can’t assume the same for someone using AI. LLM use has shown it can erode learning capabilities as more cognitive load is offloaded to a machine. Why should I spend my own time reviewing code that a contributor didn’t fully spend their own time on?
If this rubs you the slightest wrong way, please take your contributions elsewhere where they will be better received. Friendica has always been a labor of love and principles, not an effective project with productivity goals. It needs contributions, but I believe they have to come from the same moral place and I think that AI has very little place in it.

2026-07-28 23:17:48 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…m72t I’m not actively involved in Friendica anymore, but the problem with AI is that if there’s even a hint it was used to write code, then it taints the review process and casts doubts on the contributor, no matter how much of the code was manually authored.

@nprofile…m72t My personal confort limit for people contributing using AI is the Plan mode where no code is written. So far, I'm not impressed, they translated the notes I left them as is, disregarding the actual content of those notes. Maybe I wasn't clear enough, is there a standard way of giving notes to translators?

None of which better exemplified than Do Ya Wanna Taste It (2010). It's a really fun and catchy song, and then you find a live performance of the song where the audience sings along to the nonsense, and it takes a different dimension.

Walked in Time Square subway station where “Mistral AI” plastered all the walls and support columns with ads listing the “hard problems” it purports to solve, like diseases, logistics, space exploration and the stock market.
It didn’t escape me that almost none of these “problems” require more tech thrown at them but are mostly policy decisions, especially for diseases that are making a recent come-back after having been declared eradicated.
At this point in the Kool-AId process I’m not sure if the omission is intentional or borne out of ignorance, but like incompetence/malice it doesn’t really matter.

@nprofile…dzkq When the display breaks, can you confirm the system.url config value changed?

2025-03-29 19:22:53 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…dzkq Once you set a config value using the console, changing the value in the config file won't help as the console stores the value in the DB and it has precedence over the files.
No matter how you did it, the important part is that system.basepath must be set to the install folder, and system.url must be set to the full URL. You can verify what the current value used by Friendica for either config keys is using the console.
I've browsed https://inversion.tupambae.com and when the style is missing, the first line shows inversion.tupambae.com/var/www/inversioncom even though it should show https://inversion.tupambae.com. This is governed by the system.url config key.

2025-03-29 18:57:20 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…dzkq So, forget about system.urlpath, it isn't used in any way by Friendica anymore, so value or not will not change your predicament.
However, the system.url should include the scheme. It is the most important config values to determine the base URL of your Friendica install.
What do you mean by "works for a few minutes"? How many pages correctly show in the mean time? What happens when the few minutes have elapsed?

2025-03-29 11:34:52 UTC

- reply

@nprofile…dzkq Sorry, I was on mobile and couldn’t check but these keys should have been mentioned in this file, along their purpose.
system.basepath is the absolute file path where Friendica is installed, e.g. /var/www/subdomaincom in your case.
system.urlpath should only be used if Friendica is installed in a subfolder of the domain you’re using, and is relative to that domain. It doesn't seem to be relevant to you, so it should be blank.
system.url is the absolute URL where your Friendica node is accessible. It should consist in the protocol, the domain and the urlpath together. In your case it should be https://sub.domain.com/
system.php_path should be the absolue path to the PHP CLI executable. It should not point to PHP-FPM, which is used to process web requests.

From your screenshot it appears that the task creation date and the next try date are pretty close to each other, so it must only have failed a few times at most.
Running either the worker or the daemon manually will not clear deferred tasks which next try date have not been reached yet. There's an incremental back off system that increases the delay before the next try after each new failure. Once the task succeeds, the task will clear from the deferred list.

@nprofile…886s This setting is based on the system load and so depends on every system. It prevents worker tasks to be processed when this load exceeds the setting value, but the processing resumes as soon as the load drops below that value. If the queue takes a long time to be processed with no visible slowdown on the frontend, you might want to increase that value.

@nprofile…w9lu There's a long-standing GitHub issue about this very feature, but there's little traction given that most people working on Friendica have left Facebook a while ago and so have little interest or means to make the import happen.
github.com/friendica/friendica…First, I found a very old post on GitHub indicating it is possible to connect Friendica to Facebook:
Please note this URL shows an older revision of the page. The current page is at github.com/friendica/friendica… and is unequivocal about the unavailability of the Facebook connector.

@nprofile…77ng Thanks, there seem to be additional PHP processes that aren't yours (UID 1535) that are also killed, so I'm not sure it is entirely Friendica's fault. Can you please share the PHP Info page accessible from the admin?
Additionally, can you please share the contact address associated with the ID 18346 in the contact table?

@nprofile…77ng How much RAM are we talking about?

@nprofile…77ng There's no direct way to delete a worker task. This means that if you're savvy enough to do it anyway, you should be savvy enough to debug why it's hanging in the queue, which is the right way of dealing with it.
But that's not what you originally asked.

@nprofile…77ng Why would you want that?

@nprofile…jytp If you’re using frio, it’s already one step above that. Now vier is the real nitty-gritty of backend devs forced to do frontend.

@nprofile…rgpg @nprofile…dzkq Can it be emulated by an exclusive mention on other platforms?

@nprofile…g489 Not necessarily people. 46 is the number of comments replying directly to the top-level post. Then there are 70 additional comments at the second hierarchical level and up.

@nprofile…dzkq I don't exactly know how the !-mention is handled protocol-wise. Maybe @nprofile…rgpg can expand on it. On the other hand, you're right that the @-mention works from any Fediverse account as the post is automatically reshared by the group account which is a native ActivityPub feature.

@nprofile…dzkq Unfortunately some features of Friendica groups are only available from Friendica, like the !-mention that transfers post ownership to the forum account, which means it isn't distributed to your followers that don't also follow the group.
So I don't think it's a good all-purpose solution for the larger Fediverse.

@nprofile…dzkq I'm sorry, I don't understand what you are suggesting, what would be the concrete change from the current situation?
