Luna R

Alleged software developer and researcher. I love particularly cursed low level shenanigans, but I'm usually up to other things. I've mostly worked in/around computer graphics.

The "knows way too much but gets way too little done" variety of ND. My interests are *all over the place*, so I post about random topics.

On an entirely unrelated note...
Behold my super clever plan for building a little storage server without spending much!

Out of touch things tech bros say #830635626148257: "Storage/RAM is cheap"
Just because storage and RAM cost you a fraction of the price of the other components in your gaming rig, doesn't mean those things are actually cheap!
Firstly, you're confused about relative cost vs absolute cost. Secondly, you're forgetting that not all computers are designed for the very same purpose.

Right. But that's not quite what I was getting at. Let me reframe it...
Going back to your three freedoms, consider:
1. Why, specifically, do you want those freedoms to exist? As in, what goal are you seeking? (be mindful of circular logic)
2. Do you envision this as a set of principles under which everyone in a hypothetical society operates, or a set to which a subset of the population voluntarily adheres, while existing in a broader society with potentially different principles?

The issue with this is, as with the original version, who has these rights? (in your phrasing, who's "one"?)
What about those who seek to undermine others' rights under this framework? It's a "paradox of tolerance" situation.
Your point about societal enforcement is pertinent, but flawed, when considering the disproportionality of power and resources at play.
Encoding reciprocity and the mutual upholding of one another's rights is necessary for such a system to work adequately.

You're touching on some of the key issues here.
What remains, is to peel back that last layer, and question what kinds of implied structures are encoded into "the Four Freedoms" themselves. Upon closer inspection, you are likely to find them to be fundamentally incompatible with your views.
Any framework built on top of faulty axioms, will be fundamentally and irreparably faulty, in which case, we must then change the axioms.

Yes, however, there are similarly fundamental issues with the Free Software (capital F, capital S) movement, which are inextricably baked into its very foundations. And, in fact, Free Software implicitly but fundamentally enables corporate interest, on top of toxic community tendencies.
We may be more aligned than you think. I (and others) simply don't find OS or FS to embody my position, and applying the terminology of either camp, would alienate like-minded people.

The situation with contractual requirements is complex and nuanced (from both a legal as well as societal perspective). I'm currently working on a an extensive write-up which dissects this in depth (among other things).

We are very much in agreement!
The issue is not the concept of "software freedom" abstractly, but rather the specific ways in which this has been encoded into FOSS frameworks.
What I see in our communities, is a contraposition of "FOSS is valuable" and "we must abolish FOSS", when really, both camps are seeking the same outcome.
"FOSS" means different things to different people, including very toxic things. I don't find the terminology broadly useful any more.

Oh, you don't have to tell me! There's a reason I removed all references to FS/OS from my bios everywhere, despite having heavily invested myself into this stuff.
When I said we're going to fix it, "it" was referring to a much broader problematic system, rather than just the specific issue you mentioned. There is something after FS/OS, and it's being worked on.

You are right to feel disillusioned, and I feel similarly myself. But we *are* going to fix it! I know it seems impossible right now, but it's not. It will take time, probably decades, but we *will* get there! (hopefully within our lifetimes)
