Local news outlets treating this election like any other election (at least here in Philly) is tone deaf to the point of feeling dystopian. Smiling anchors joking about how “crazy” this election is, when most of us are legit frightened and in no mood to laugh, makes it feel like we’re in some strange Stephen King novel. #uspolitics

A minority
A religion other than Christian (to be more specific, a religion other than the Christianity the GOP considers Christianity)
Atheist
An immigrant or child of immigrants
A woman

Educated
Vegetarian/Vegan
A Democrat
Someone who disagrees with anything the GOP says
Then you are considered an “enemy of the state” and Trump and his minions will go after you.

I was in the bedroom sitting by the window and saw a shadow. I looked out in time to see a huge bird coming in for a landing on the ground, on the other side of the window. It sat there for a few minutes, staring at me, then flew off. I got a really good look at it and this was it- a Northern Goshawk. It was beautiful. #birds

Every October, I go on a horror movie spree. I prefer suspense and psychological thrillers (Blair Witch, etc) , and avoid slasher stuff (although you can’t completely avoid it in the horror genre). I like minimalist, character driven stories that don’t rely on special effects, the kind of movie that scares you on a deep level. I’ve asked myself why I like horror flicks and it’s the story telling and imagination needed.
So,for horror fans out there, why do YOU like horror flicks? Please boost

“The rise of ghost jobs is muddying the jobs report. It’s making it harder for the Fed to make decisions and understand what the labor market looks like,” said Dan Kaplan, senior partner at Korn Ferry, an HR consulting firm. “people will tell you that it’s very tough out there. We’ve talked about this notion of unhirables. People who are out of work get laid off and just can’t find a job. They can’t buy an interview”

It’s telling when the first toot I saw this morning claimed BOTH VP candidates were “more presidential” than either presidential candidate. It’s telling that we’ve come to the point where a strong woman calling out the lies of a lunatic is somehow a bad idea, but a chronic liar and sociopath like Vance is considered presidential simply because he wore a suit and could string together a coherent sentence of lies. It’s not the opinion of everyone, but some really will think that. SMH

A reminder now that we’re in Fall. Please do not demonize workers who go to work sick. Nearly 20 percent of US workers do not have paid sick leave. Many only have 3-5 days/year. If those workers call out sick, they lose a day’s pay, which is a hit for most people. Also, lower level employees are often encouraged to come in when sick and made to feel like they’re doing something wrong if they call out. So many US workers would love to stay home when sick. So many just cannot.

2024-09-19 20:59:10 UTC

As a culture, we’ve done a lousy job of modeling what a happy life should be. For many (me included) we have spent our lives focused on earning and surviving and if we get a little time to do things that make us happy, it’s implied that it’s a time waster because we should be earning more or working more instead. We end up feeling almost guilty for indulging in hobbies that make us happy. For lower income people, it’s hard wired in us that anything that doesn’t earn money is a time waster.

2024-09-18 17:01:01 UTC

I have no children of my own. The reasons for this are my business and no one else’s. But I deserve a voice, I am “humbled”, and made my life count for something by, among other things, adopting a ton of pets over the years, most of whom were sick or about to be put down.
But I shouldn’t have to explain my worth. The right is making sure women like me feel the need to not only defend not having our own kids, but defend whether we’re worthy of life itself.

The “pro life”party will regulate a woman’s uterus (and who cares if she dies as a result), execute criminals, agree with insurance plans that deny coverage for cancer patients, take away life saving insurance for those on Medicaid - and refuse to regulate guns that kill more people per capita than anywhere in the world. We need to stop letting them get away with calling themselves “pro life” by calling them out every single time they say it.

Vote Red - a fist appears. It punches you in the face and says you have to pay out of pocket because your crap insurance won't cover the injury. Another hand steals your wallet and takes your $$ via new taxes. If you're a woman, another hand attaches a tracking device to your uterus.

I worked in HR for various mid size companies. One constant was that execs cracked down on employees when they noticed they were either too comfortable or happy. I can’t tell you how many times I was instructed to send out a warning email when there seemed to be a happy vibe in the office.Mind you, work was getting done, it wasn’t slacking or otherwise. People were just laughing and relaxed on their way to or from the bathroom or break room. Sure enough, I was usually contacted by the execs🙄

The planet does not need more 'successful people'. The planet desperately needs more peacemakers, healers, restorers, storytellers, and lovers of all kinds. It needs people to live well in their places. It needs people with moral courage willing to join the struggle to make our world habitable and humane, and these qualities have little to do with success as our culture defines it"
Environmentalist David Orr.
