On this day, 1 June 1985, British police brutally attacked new age travellers (i.e. not GRT people) heading to Stonehenge in the Battle of the Beanfield.
Police smashed the windows of vehicles travellers and others were using, dragged people out through the broken glass, beating them and breaking teeth, glasses and bones. Pregnant women were clubbed, and police set several of the travellers' vehicles on fire.
Officers then arrested 537 people, the biggest mass arrest of civilians in many years, and systematically looted, smashed and burned travellers' homes. Seven healthy dogs belonging to travellers were later killed by the RSPCA.
The media portrayed the travellers as a marauding army, with the BBC showing ordinary household implements which had been seized, describing them as "weapons gathered up". ITN journalist Kim Sabido recorded what she had seen:
"What we've witnessed in the last half hour here has been surely some of the most brutal action by the police forces in Britain for a long time… hitting out wildly by the police… Young women with babies in their arms were hit as well. At one stage one of the cameramen from Fleet Street was arrested for being on this site - we were pushed and shoved to one side, but the worst of it all was that the people in those coaches who were trying to escape from the police were just grabbed, their windows were smashed and they themselves were just beaten, sometimes senselessly, on the floor."
His commentary was removed from the video footage when it aired on the news.
Participants believed they were targeted by the Conservative government of Margaret Thatcher in order to smash new age traveller culture. One participant told activist newsletter Schnews:
"The number of people who were living on buses had been doubling every year for four years. It was anarchy in action, and it was seen to be working by so many people that they wanted to be a part of it too."

Imagine a man who spent his entire life deciphering the secret languages of history, from medieval manuscripts to the hidden codes in pop culture. This was Umberto Eco. As a world-renowned semiotician, he understood better than anyone how symbols and words shape our collective reality. But toward the end of his life, he looked at the digital landscape and saw a structural collapse of intellectual hierarchy.
Eco observed: Social media gives legions of idiots the right to speak when they once only spoke at a bar after a glass of wine, without harming the community... but now they have the same right to speak as a Nobel Prize winner. It is the invasion of the idiots.
Eco delivered this critique in 2015 while receiving an honorary degree at the University of Turin. His concern was not rooted in elitism, but in the loss of editorial filtering. He spent decades analyzing how truth is constructed, and he feared that a platform where every voice is amplified equally would eventually lead to the death of expertise. In his view, the democratization of opinion had accidentally dismantled the value of knowledge.
When the village gossip and the seasoned scholar occupy the same digital stage, how do we distinguish signal from noise?

Between the two lakes lies Falbygden, a varied landscape with many moors and unique table mountains. Few landscapes are as strongly characterised by the past as Falbygden; among other ancient remains three quarters of all of Sweden’s passage tombs can be found here. In all, about 260 monuments have survived. This makes Falbygden home to one of the largest concentrations of megalithic tombs in northern Europe.

J.P. Morgan’s supply-chain mapping suggests the last pre-disruption Persian Gulf cargoes hit South-East Asia, South Asia and East Africa by about 1 April, Europe by about 10 April, and the US by about 15 April. Australia's is due by 20 April... after those dates, the absence of replenishment becomes much harder to hide.
The Strait of Hormuz disruption is not just about crude. Analysts and logistics reporting say it also hits LNG, LPG, petrochemicals, methanol, plastics feedstocks and helium, which means the pain doesn’t stop at the bowser. It runs through manufacturing, freight, construction inputs, chemicals and tech supply chains as inventories thin out.
So the sequence is roughly this:
First, people panic locally.
Then wholesalers and retailers start paying up to secure supply.
Then inventories that were already on the water get delivered.
Then the pipeline starts running dry.
That is when the shock stops being a story for traders and shipping nerds and starts becoming obvious to everyone else.
Australia sits in that early wave. The map’s timing lines up with reports that parts of Asia have already been scrambling for replacement cargoes, with even unusual US Gulf Coast-to-Australia distillate routes being used to plug gaps.
And if the disruption drags on, this stops being about “higher prices” and becomes about allocation.
Who gets fuel.
Who pays more.
Which industries keep moving.
Which ones start slowing, rationing, or passing costs straight through to households.
Barclays says that the Hormuz disruption could remove 13 - 14 million barrels a day from global supply, while Kpler says cumulative losses could exceed 400 million barrels by mid-April if flows don’t normalise.
So yes, shortages so far have been partly behavioural... fear, stockpiling, domestic scrambling.
But the actual physical supply problem has yet to come.
For our part of the world, the cliff edge is very close. By mid-April, the “surely they’ll sort it out” phase gives way to the “oh, this is real” phase. Europe follows. The US later, but still not immune, especially through price rather than outright physical scarcity.
In other words... the panic buying is the opening act.
The real show starts when the ships stop arriving.

What Happens When a Bad-Tempered, Distractible Doofus Runs an Empire? | The New Yorker
One of the few things that Kaiser Wilhelm II, who ruled Germany from 1888 to 1918, had a talent for was causing outrage. One of the many things that Wilhelm was convinced he was brilliant at, despite all evidence to the contrary, was “personal diplomacy,” fixing foreign policy through one-on-one meetings with other European monarchs and statesmen. In fact, Wilhelm could do neither the personal nor the diplomacy, and these meetings rarely went well. The Kaiser viewed other people in instrumental terms, was a compulsive liar, and seemed to have a limited understanding of cause and effect. He was susceptible but never truly controllable. He asserted his authority unpredictably, as if to prove he was still in charge, staging rogue interventions into his own advisers’ policies and sacking ministers without warning. Sound familiar? Revisit Miranda Carter on the lessons of Kaiser Wilhelm II:

A Numbers Station back on air:
The transmission is called a “numbers station” — a Cold War-era tool that employs radio transmissions and old-school cryptology to transmit secret messages — usually to spies around the world.
The concept: Using a random series of a numbers, generated by some mechanical or electronic device or something more powerful, a person can send a coded message to another person in possession of a decoder, often called a “one-time pad.”
Anyone can listen to the transmission; shortwave transmissions travel long distances, signals bouncing off the atmosphere. But only a person with the decoder key can decipher it. The concept got a cameo in the US spy drama The Americans, set in the 1980s.
Numbers station code is “absolutely unbreakable,” said Fernandez, who more than two decades ago published a four-CD audio compendium of hundreds of recordings from around the world called the Conet Project. It’s considered the Bible for numbers-station enthusiasts.
“The number keys that are used are perfectly random. There are no mathematical operations you can use on them to brute force them,” he said. “And even if the answer gets out, say in proper English, it’s not necessarily understandable.”
“You can’t tell anything about a random set of letters or numbers by their length other than their length. The length of message is not the content of the information being transmitted,” he said. “But it is possible to infer the purpose of stations by the length that they’re online and the noise they transmit if there is no text message.”

"Pinker’s own work, imbued with a Panglossian vision of progress, has a similar tendency to uphold the status quo, as historian David Bell, reviewing his 2018 book Enlightenment Now for The Nation, explained:
'Given Pinker’s scorn for intellectuals and disregard of social movements, it is no surprise that his politics, and his hopes for the future, can best be summed up as technocratic neoliberalism. He puts his trust in free markets and the guidance of enlightened scientists and moguls (is it really a surprise that Bill Gates calls Enlightenment Now “my new favorite book of all time”?). Let the rich get very, very rich, as long as everyone else’s income is rising, and don’t worry about the power they may be accumulating in the process.'
It’s not surprising that someone like Epstein—interested in legitimizing their place on the top of the global food chain—would seek out Pinker’s company."

After several years of stealing and selling at least 62 valuable books from the Royal National Library of Sweden's collection to Christoph Calaminus at the auction house Ketterer Kunst in Hamburg, Anders Burius (born Erik Anders Jonsson; 2 August 1956 – 7 December 2004), was exposed and later confessed to the thefts in 2004.
On 8 December 2004, at 04:39 am SOS Alarm received calls about a major explosion in central Stockholm. Thirteen fire trucks from four fire departments were sent to the scene, sixteen police patrols blocked off the area, and fifty-five people were evacuated by bus.
During a short release from pre-court custody Anders Burius died by suicide, by slitting his wrist and cutting the gas line in his apartment, which later resulted in an extensive explosion with about a dozen people injured. His body was found among the debris four days later.

British Online Archives is excited to announce that they have a fascinating primary source collection coming soon—"Witchcraft and Magic in England, c. 1400–1920”.
Comprising documents sourced from The National Archives, UK, The British Library, UCL Special Collections, and The Folklore Society (UK), it charts the evolution of witchcraft and magic in England over five centuries. This collection incorporates a broad range of sources, exploring an array of key topics and themes, such as gender, medicine, politics, religion, and science.
It hones in on the concept of the witch in late medieval thought and literature. It also includes assize records from witch trials of the early modern period and examines some of the pamphlets and printed material that cast the accused (mainly women) as deviant social forces.
The sources also spotlight groups who escaped suspicion—members of the elite or “cunning folk”, as well as medical practitioners who engaged in “respectable magic”. The study of witchcraft and magic became a widespread scholarly pursuit in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Literature generated by those who studied these compelling subjects are included.
Interdisciplinary in ethos and expansive in terms of its chronological scope and the sources that it contains, this collection will appeal to students, educators, and researchers working within a range of scholarly fields, including anthropology, literary studies, philosophy, sociology, and women’s studies. It will likewise interest those situated within branches of historical study, such as the history of ideas and the history of science, as well as social, cultural, and political history.

Sienna-Rose Caprari Corby, a 27-year-old from Balmain, Sydney was charged in August with three offences, including using a carriage service to threaten to kill and threaten serious harm.
It's alleged the threats were a series of escalating violent messages sent to NSW Premier Chris Minns' official Instagram account, and were related to the premier's position on the March for Humanity protest over the Harbour Bridge last month.
The March for Humanity was fought tooth and nail by NSW Labor Premier Chris Minns and the state’s police force. Minns lied that the rally would plunge the city into “chaos”.
Corby is yet to enter a plea to the charges.
She remains on bail, and is set to front court again later this month.

A “very significant” unpublished story by Jack Kerouac described as “a lost chapter of the On the Road saga” has been discovered after languishing in the files of an assassinated Mafia crime boss for at least 40 years.
The two-page typewritten manuscript signed by Kerouac in green ink is titled The Holy, Beat, and Crazy Next Thing and is dated 15 April 1957, five months before his classic of beat literature, On the Road, was published.
It was discovered last year during the disposal of items owned by Paul Castellano, who ran the feared Gambino crime family in New York from 1976 until he was murdered in a hail of gunfire on 16 December 1985.
It is not known how or when Castellano acquired the Kerouac story. According to the company that bought it from his estate, Your Own Museum, it is thought to have originally been given to a San Francisco poet in the beat generation circle. The company said: “It has remained in private hands, meticulously preserved, for over six decades. It is a direct, tangible link to the moment the beat generation exploded into the American consciousness.

Organisms are Processes Not Things with Wahida Khander
We tend to think of the world as divided into bits and things.
From microscopic atoms to massive stars to everyday objects like books and chairs, the view that the world is carved up is deeply embedded in our lives. But could this be a radical mistake? Is reality really about processes, not things?
In this exclusive IAI interview, join philosopher Wahida Khandker as she makes the case that we should abandon our traditional views about reality and view the world in terms of processes rather than objects.
Khandker is a senior lecturer in philosophy at Manchester Metropolitan University. Her research focuses on intersections between process and thought, particularly the work of Henri Bergson, and the philosophy of biology.

Israel admits deliberate attack on the journalist, known for frontline coverage, in a strike on a tent outside al-Shifa hospital.
Calling al-Sharif “one of Gaza’s bravest journalists,” Al Jazeera said the attack was “a desperate attempt to silence voices in anticipation of the occupation of Gaza.”
In a final message, which Al Jazeera said had been written on 6 April and which was posted to al-Sharif’s X account after his death, the reporter said that he had “lived through pain in all its details, tasted suffering and loss many times, yet I never once hesitated to convey the truth as it is, without distortion or falsification.”
“Allah may bear witness against those who stayed silent, those who accepted our killing, those who choked our breath, and whose hearts were unmoved by the scattered remains of our children and women, doing nothing to stop the massacre that our people have faced for more than a year and a half,” he continued.
The 28-year-old leaves behind a wife and two small children. His father was killed by an Israeli strike on the family home in Jabalia refugee camp in Gaza City in December 2023. At the time al-Sharif said he would continue to report and refused to leave northern Gaza.

Deep in a New Zealand swamp, scientists discovered an ancient kauri tree that had been entombed for more than 40,000 years—its trunk preserved like a wooden time capsule. But this wasn’t just any prehistoric tree. Its rings revealed something extraordinary: it had lived through the Laschamp Excursion, a rare moment when Earth’s magnetic poles reversed. More alarming, however, was the period just before the flip—known as the Adams Event—when the planet’s magnetic field all but vanished, exposing the Earth to an onslaught of cosmic radiation.
With Earth’s magnetic shield weakened to as little as 0–6% of its normal strength, solar and cosmic radiation surged in, triggering global climate chaos. Ice sheets expanded dramatically, storm systems rerouted, and once-verdant lands like parts of Australia were swallowed by desert. Some researchers believe the event contributed to the extinction of the Neanderthals and forced early humans into caves for protection—where they began creating the earliest known symbolic art. These dramatic shifts suggest the Adams Event wasn’t just a magnetic anomaly—it was a turning point in human history.
Now, the ancient kauri stands as both relic and warning. Its rings carry the silent testimony of a world on the edge, a reminder that our magnetic field is not permanent. If such a collapse were to happen today, the consequences could be dire—satellite failure, communication breakdowns, grid collapses, and rapid shifts in climate. This tree, long dead, still speaks—whispering across the ages about the fragility of the invisible forces that shield our modern world.

Do not try to be more productive
than a machine.
Be more unpredictable than one.
Slow down. Sleep in. Be late. Dream sideways.
Every moment you refuse to hustle for the algorithm,
you reclaim your right to be a human being- not a human doing.
Your value is not in output.
It's in awe.
It's in the fact that you still look at the sky and say: "Wow."
We do not need to compete with Al.
We need to reclaim the terrain of the soul.
Let the machines optimize. Let them calculate, simulate, replicate.
We will imagine, wander, err, contradict, and wonder.
Our power is not in precision.
It's in presence.
Not in speed, but in stillness.
Not in perfection, but in the poetic glitch of being alive.

I have always believed that the war in Ukraine was an attempt to seperate Russia from China by destabilising the Putin regime and bringing Russia closer to the West, at least as a result of a negotiated peace if not regime change. Everyone knows the war cannot be won by either side on the battlefield as long as Ukraine has Western support. But letting Russia simply win, which it could do if the West/US withdrew, actually defeats the goal of further isolating China.
This rationale seems to be holding true according to the indicators for the current truce plan - The US was always willing to sacrifice Ukrainian lives, by making it the frontline in its proxy war. But now the US is willing to sacrifice the entire country of Ukraine in order to split Russia from China. To do this, the US needs to bypass Europe and the EU, which is exactly what it is doing now. The results will be bad for Europe, terrible for Ukraine but perfect for the USA and eventually Russia. Bad for China too.

“Socrates said, ‘The misuse of language induces evil in the soul.’ He wasn't talking about grammar. To misuse language is to use it the way politicians and advertisers do, for profit, without taking responsibility for what the words mean. Language used as a means to get power or make money goes wrong: it lies. Language used as an end in itself, to sing a poem or tell a story, goes right, goes towards the truth.
A writer is a person who cares what words mean, what they say, how they say it. Writers know words are their way towards truth and freedom, and so they use them with care, with thought, with fear, with delight. By using words well they strengthen their souls. Story-tellers and poets spend their lives learning that skill and art of using words well. And their words make the souls of their readers stronger, brighter, deeper.”

In a groundbreaking discovery that challenges our fundamental understanding of physics, scientists at Columbia University have revealed that sound waves possess actual mass. This fascinating finding demonstrates that sound, traditionally thought of as merely a form of energy, carries a tiny but measurable gravitational mass through quantum particles called phonons.
To put this into perspective, a 1-watt sound wave traveling through water for just one second carries approximately 0.1 milligrams of mass—a minute amount, but one that opens up entirely new avenues of scientific inquiry. The implications of this discovery are profound: sound waves not only respond to gravitational forces but also generate their own minuscule gravitational fields, adding an unexpected layer to our understanding of acoustic physics.
This revelation aligns with the groundbreaking research conducted by the International Space Federation (ISF), where we have been exploring the fundamental relationship between energy, mass, and quantum vacuum fluctuations. The ISF's work on "The Origin of Mass and the Nature of Gravity" provides a complementary theoretical framework, suggesting that mass itself emerges from quantum electromagnetic vacuum fluctuations. Using sophisticated analytical techniques, the ISF researchers have demonstrated how these vacuum field interactions might explain both gravitational forces and quantum phenomena within a unified model.
For those intrigued by these fundamental questions about the nature of reality, the ISF's ongoing research program represents one of the most ambitious attempts to reconcile quantum mechanics with gravity—a challenge that has captivated physicists since Einstein's time.

Cop It Sweet (1991)
One of the most controversial documentary programs ever produced by the ABC, dealing. with the activities of police in the Sydney inner-city suburb of Redfern. It is not a place for the faint-hearted, and is regarded as one of the most volatile police districts in the country, with a history of clashes between police and Aborigines. In 1991, an ABC-TV documentary crew gained exclusive access to Redfern Police for six weeks, following several officers on their round of duties. The officers include Michael, 19, just out of the Police Academy, and Glenn, who at 26 is an "old hand" in Redfern. The program is a revealing portrait of police culture in Redfern. It drew an unprecedented response from viewers, police and public figures because of its frank depiction of police methods, its uncensored language and its uncompromising realism.

Michel Foucault, the renowned French philosopher, famously questioned the boundaries of art and its place in society with his statement, “What strikes me is the fact that in our society, art has become something which is related only to objects and not to individuals, or to life.
That art is something which is specialized or which is done by experts who are artists. But couldn't everyone’s life become a work of art?” This line reveals Foucault’s provocative ideas about the potential of human experience to transcend conventional art forms. Foucault, known for his explorations of power, knowledge, and social constructs, urged individuals to view life as an artistic endeavor, challenging the notion that art is confined to objects and reserved for the “experts.”
Foucault’s thought emerged in a time when traditional definitions of art and society were being questioned. Born in 1926 in Poitiers, France, he grew up in a world transformed by two world wars, political upheaval, and shifting cultural values. His academic journey led him to explore fields ranging from psychology to philosophy, disciplines he used to dissect how institutions, language, and societal norms influence individuals’ lives. By the 1970s, Foucault was deeply concerned with how modern society restricted self-expression, placing constraints on individuals’ ability to shape their own lives.
In this context, his statement on life as a work of art invites a radical rethinking of art’s role. Foucault viewed personal freedom as the highest form of art, suggesting that individuals should seek to shape their lives with the same intentionality, creativity, and care that artists bring to their craft. He argued that in a world increasingly dominated by institutions that dictate behavior and identity, finding ways to live “artistically” could serve as an act of liberation. For Foucault, transforming one’s daily life into a creative expression was both a philosophical and political act, opposing society’s push towards conformity.
This idea resonates particularly in the concept of the “aesthetic of existence,” a philosophy Foucault advocated later in his career. He saw the cultivation of life as a kind of artwork, where individuals take ownership of their thoughts, actions, and values. To live “aesthetically,” in Foucault’s view, meant to live authentically, in constant self-exploration and transformation, moving beyond the limitations set by societal norms.
Foucault’s vision for life as art challenges the conventional boundaries of creativity, suggesting that true artistry lies in the ability to reshape one’s existence. His ideas continue to inspire those who seek to redefine art beyond museums and galleries, viewing it instead as a lens through which one can approach every action and decision. Foucault’s thought leaves us with a question: if art is the ultimate form of self-expression, what could be more profound than turning our lives into our greatest masterpiece?

I predict we will see a school of thought emerge from the groundwork that was done by Mark Fisher. Mark seems to be consistently drawing attention to areas of consideration more than proposing a structure for discourse (which I attribute to Deleuze). In doing this Mark Fisher uses a rhetorical system that draws from the personal and the everyday and I find it inspiring. One example of this would be from this video, with his connection of psychedelic consciousness (07:15) to experience and thought, using the Beatles as a model for culture. Mark was a cultural theorist who specialised in capitalist social relations using (among others) Deleuze-Guattari but he focuses on a different set of parameters as a translating lens. As he wrote in Terminator vs Avatar; "But it’s now necessary to reverse the Deleuze-Guattari/Libidinal Economy emphasis on politics as a means to greater libidinal intensification: rather, it’s a question of instrumentalising libido for political purposes." In such a quote I see the point and application of the ideas of Deleuze-Guattari into my own life and situation but in a pragmatic sense, rather than a mode of consciousness or philosophical base.

WOODLANDS DARK AND DAYS BEWITCHED explores the folk horror phenomenon from its beginnings in a trilogy of films – Michael Reeves’ Witchfinder General (1968), Piers Haggard’s Blood on Satan’s Claw (1971) and Robin Hardy’s The Wicker Man (1973) – through its proliferation on British television in the 1970s and its culturally specific manifestations in American, Asian, Australian and European horror, to the genre’s revival over the last decade. Touching on over 200 films and featuring over 50 interviewees, WOODLANDS DARK AND DAYS BEWITCHED investigates the many ways that we alternately celebrate, conceal and manipulate our own histories in an attempt to find spiritual resonance in our surroundings.

The American literary theorist and Marxist Fredric Jameson has passed away at the age of 90.
Jameson was the Knut Schmidt-Nielsen Professor of Comparative Literature, Professor of Romance Studies (French), and Director of the Institute for Critical Theory at Duke University. In 2012, the Modern Language Association gave Jameson its sixth Award for Lifetime Scholarly Achievement.
Jameson argued against postmodernists, asserting that these phenomena had or could have been understood successfully within a modernist framework; the postmodern failure to achieve this understanding implied an abrupt break in the dialectical refinement of thought. In his view, postmodernity's merging of all discourse into an undifferentiated whole was the result of the colonization of the cultural sphere, which had retained at least partial autonomy during the prior modernist era, by a newly organized corporate capitalism. Following Adorno and Horkheimer's analysis of the culture industry, Jameson discussed this phenomenon in his critical discussion of architecture, film, narrative, and visual arts, as well as in his strictly philosophical work.
Jameson's analysis of postmodernism attempts to view it as historically grounded; he therefore explicitly rejects any moralistic opposition to postmodernity as a cultural phenomenon, and continued to insist upon a Hegelian immanent critique that would "think the cultural evolution of late capitalism dialectically, as catastrophe and progress all together". His refusal to simply dismiss postmodernism from the onset, however, was misinterpreted by some Marxist intellectuals as an implicit endorsement of postmodern views.
Along with a series of works on aesthetic form, Jameson published three related studies of dialectical theory: Valences of the Dialectic (2009), which includes Jameson's critical responses to Slavoj Žižek, Gilles Deleuze, and other contemporary theorists; The Hegel Variations (2010), a commentary on Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit; and Representing Capital: A Reading of Volume One (2011), an analysis of Marx's Das Kapital.
An overview of Jameson's work, Fredric Jameson: Live Theory, by Ian Buchanan, was published in 2007.

" As a child I belonged to the generation that had to stay at the table, quiet and eat with the grown ups and I have this memory of the meals taking too long. And there, that day, there was a long discussion at the table. I think Antonin Artaud was probably feeling a bit depressed that day and they were talking, and he said that he did not know how to write anymore, he was not able to write, he did not know how to write. I had just started school and had just begun to learn how to read and write. After the meal, I timidly approached him and told him that I could help him. I said to him, Monsieur Artaud, I go to school and I am learning how to write and I am willing to show you too if you want. You see, I took literally the discussion at the table. What is wonderful is that Artaud went ahead and played the game. We got dressed, walked downhill towards Marne to go find a stationary shop. We bought a notebook, pencils, a rubber and a pencil sharpener. When we got back, we sat at the table and I instructed him how to make the "i" in the alphabet which was the easiest letter to write. I can't say how much time this took because I do not experience time today the same way I used to do when I was a child. It could have been half an hour or a quarter of an hour or a whole hour, but I have the impression that we worked and Artaud worked hard on this, filling in the pages. In the end, I had taught him how to write letters like we learned at school. I had my notebook and he had his and I inspected his work. He played the game until the end." - Domnine Milliex

Thinking of friends and family in Australia. This summer is looking like it will be horrific:
"Climate scientists have described the extreme temperatures across Australia since the middle of August as “gobsmacking”."

Time of Pandemics
Antibodies, vaccine trials and the social factors determining health – what can we learn from the HIV experiences in the global south, in this time of COVID-19?
When it comes to tackling COVID-19, has the world learned anything from the global HIV epidemic?
This exploration, by South African filmmaker Rehad Desai, unpicks connections between the two pandemic experiences, from a global south perspective.
At the centre is the story of the four decades-long (and still fruitless) search for an HIV antibody vaccine, aimed at stalling transmission of a virus that still afflicts millions of people. This HIV vaccine research, and its extensive clinical trial infrastructure in South Africa, was crucial for the rapid rollout of COVID-19 vaccine trials there in 2020. Yet, while some of the world benefitted from this slipstreaming, South Africans and most developing countries dropped to the back of the queue when it came to actually being supplied with them.
The theme of inequality – between rich and poor people and nations – as well as resonant themes of blame, science denial and the critical role of dwindling public health systems, runs through both pandemic experiences.
This journey through recent health history includes insights into the evolution of pathogens and the social factors determining health. With contributions from international experts and local stakeholders, it asks us to consider how we, as a world, will face a future of more variants, new pathogens and future pandemics if we continue to put profit before people and the planet.
As Desai asks at the end of the film: Isn’t it time to get back to a world where health is a basic right and where the quest for profit does not lead us all further towards catastrophe?

Milk & Serial is a 62-minute, found-footage horror by YouTuber Curry Barker, and it manages to be at once ruthlessly effective and wonderfully authentic. Racking up 348,000 views in the two weeks since its release, its popularity has been supercharged by raves on Reddit that have since crossed over into traditional media. Bloody Disgusting called it “one of the year’s best-kept secrets” and this week Barker found himself being interviewed by no less than Variety.

SO THE TREES OKAY, THEY TALK TO EACH OTHER RIGHT? THEY USE AN UNDERGROUND NETWORK OF FUNGUS AND ROOTS TO SEND ELECTRICAL SIGNALS AND ASK FOR NUTRIENTS, WATER, AND EVEN WARN ABOUT DANGER OKAY? BRO IT’S BASICALLY AN UNDERGROUND MUSHROOM TELEPHONE. MOTHER TREES HAVE EVEN BEEN SHOWN TO RECOGNIZE THEIR OFFSPRING AND FAVOR THEM OVER OTHER TREES WHEN SENDING NUTRIENTS. SOME TREES EVEN BECOME BROS AND ARE CAREFUL NOT TO TAKE EACH OTHER’S SUNLIGHT SPACE. THE TREES ARE SENTIENT BRO. ITS A SYMBIOTIC MUSHROOM-TREE RELATIONSHIP, MAN.

This ukiyo-e woodblock print, by the late Edo period artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798-1861), illustrates a story involving the “Sea Monk” or Umibōzu, a spirit in Japanese folklore. The ocean dwelling spirit — so called because of his smooth monk-like round head — is said to capsize the ship of anyone who dares speak to it. The specific tale illustrated in Kuniyoshi’s woodblock tells of a sailor Kawanaya Tokuzo who, despite it being considered unlucky in the world of seafaring, decides to go to sea on the last day of the year. A terrible storm breaks out, and the giant figure of the Umibōzu appears. Against the roar of the waves the apparition asks, “Name the most horrible thing you know!” Tokuzo yells in reply, “My profession is the most horrible thing I know!” The answer apparently satisfies the monster as he then disappears along with the storm.
