"QS had expressed concern that Romi would get an unfair advantage over other candidates"
SHE HAS TO WRITE BY BLINKING. WHAT ADVANTAGE? https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c6zxj8grer7ro
This is a very typical response to disability accommodations. They are seen as giving the disabled person an advantage, when really they're just trying to make it possible. It is a confusion between equality and equity.
Personally, I think this examination board should offer all students the opportunity to conduct their examinations solely by blinking out the spelling of letters and see how many people really wish to take up this option, with its many advantages over other candidates.

This is the political economic trade-off in our space: politics (time devoted to critiquing AI, developing policies for handling it) vs. pleasure (reading and teaching literature). And that’s what AI, along with every other bureaucratic incursion, ends up taking away from us.

It would be nice to think so, but I suspect a reason such questions even arise is not simply that these things have not happened, but a suspicion that 'searchable', in our brave new world, means 'ingested into an LLM and made available for querying'.

There's a service here called Patients Know Best that lets you monitor all of your medical tests. I wish it was called Experts Know Lots, Which Is Why Patients Consult Them, But Patients Should Be Able To Know Things About Themselves.

The Register of British Slave Traders. A huge research achievement. https://britishslavetraders.org
I think I need to read the narrative book-form version to navigate it, though. https://www.penguin.co.uk/books/460026/britains-slave-traders-by-pettigrew-william-a/9781847927903
There is lots more interesting information on their about page, and also the required, I think, disclaimer about the word 'trader' and its potential sanitisation of the brutality. https://britishslavetraders.org/about-us/

Totally agree that there needs to be a shift around this.
I eventually felt that way about comments on my website. I decided that, actually, this is my space. You don't have any divine right to put your words in my domain.
I think you are totally right that UX approaches only go so far. Perhaps strong moderation tools take this a bit further. But it is really a shift in norms and attitudes that is going to be the crucial, yet very difficult, social aspect to change, I think. Even powerful blocking tools don't help because, at least for me, I have ingrained the social stigma that somehow this is a bad thing, and that I'm not talking to people on 'both sides' of the debate. That's probably an embarrassing admission, but I think it's a true self-psychological analysis. It seeps in.
Anyway, if you have ideas about ways to make this better, I would be very interested in reading them in future.

"The Hugging Face attack was dangerous, reckless and somebody should go to prison for it. If a regular person used massive amounts of compute capacity to hack something, they’d be arrested." https://www.wheresyoured.at/ai-is-already-in-dangerous-hands/
"we need to start arresting people for committing crimes ... because it’s clear that the people running these labs are irresponsible and the people backing them don’t give a shit."

The scraping of Spotify by the shadow library, Anna's Archive, has made it into Private Eye, where the hypocrisy of Spotify - which originally was a pirate scraper site - is brought to light.

Small library to send data over sound. Basically: send data even to air-gapped devices.
