So I'm at an internal work conference for security and security-adjacent Principal Engineers. Yesterday I signed up for a lightning talk about cracking ECDSA keys from the CT logs - before I had results. As the lightning talks started, I was realizing that against my expectations, there were no other trivially small ECDSA keys in my dataset.
Also I had no slides because I had been getting the cracker working.
So, I walked up on stage and without bothering to introduce myself asked the room "how many fingers am I holding up" (4), then explained what I'd built, that I had found nothing, and that people should share null results more.

Just to be clear, I am currently dumping elliptic curve keys from the tls certificate transparency logs, and will then be running an optimized mass-cracker tool that I'll use to check a few trillion weak private keys against the entire set simultaneously using sparse bloom filters.
The scanner (which is being heavily cribbed from my mass cryptocurrency key cracker "brainflayer") should be able to scan hundreds of thousands if not millions of keys per curve per second per core.
I am not aware of anyone else having previously done this, so hold on to your butts.

We've all been there. A late night, a tired brain, and a dd command with a typo in the output file. In the world of systems administration, a single character can be the difference between a successful backup and destroyed data.
But it doesn't have to be that way. Today, I am proud to introduce libclaymore. Simply install and configure it according to the README.md and never again scramble for backups (you have those, right?) after swapping if= and of=.
libclaymore works by introducing a cognitive speed bump. When armed, it prohibits the standard of=. Instead, you must use enemy= or target=, both of which are very different from if=.

I have Debian with ZFS native encrypted rootfs booting on a Radxa ROCK 5 ITX. The only remaining issue is that the passphrase isn't passed from ZFSBootMenu to Debian's initramfs, so it has to be entered twice. Should be fixable.

I bought four Intel D3-S4610 480GB SSDs on eBay.
Three from some dude for £55 each, and one from a refurbisher for £70.
The £55 drives were pretty much prestine, the £70 drive had logged over three petabytes of writes and showed 27% lifetime remaining.
Also, I now have a USB-C SATA bridge that can issue ATA Security commands.

I want to build a 80x25 character display of out of 16 segment (plus dot) white LED modules.
I found some four character modules that are 40.4x16mm, so I could do 40 80.8x80mm boards for a total of 808x400mm, and based on the 5mA per segment at 3V, about 500W max power draw, though multiplexing seems obligatory here.
The problem is I would have to solder tens of thousands of connections since SMD versions of these don't seem to exist.

In general, creating a burner email account and using it to leak stuff to me is actually very safe.
My server is self-hosted, is full disk encrypted, uses cross-jurisdictional shenanigans to make subpoenas difficult, and if you leak anything to me that is relevant to my interests I will delete the logs of where it came from and have the technical skills required to sanitize documents.
This is not just about lawyers, but anyone with access to documentation around decision-making regarding human rights at organizations, or who has damaging information on anti-trans extremists can do the world a favor.
Do the right thing.

Update on my legal case: The European Court of Human Rights has accepted the filing of my claim against the UK.
This mainly procedural - confirmation that the claim was filed on time, complete, and compliant with the rules.
The next step will be a judicial review to confirm admissibility, but I have no idea how long of a queue there is for that. Assuming it's admissible, a hearing will then be allocated.

I killed time on my flight by playing "Hold 'Em Poker ©2008 Global Eagle" on the in-flight entire system. They start you with ¤5,000 in chips.
Eventually I figured out that I could set the tournament mode to increase the blinds (eventually adding antes) every 60 seconds, and then just raise aggressively and steal the pot ~90% of hands without having to show my hole cards.
Oddly, the AI players are much more prone to bluffing at lower stakes, so this game actually gets easier as it progresses.
I had about ¤15M when the system shut down.

The Gender Recognition Act 2004, as currently written, is blatantly incompatible with the Equality Act 2010, Article 8 (right to private life). Under a reasonable interpretation a GRC should be granted with no more than a sworn statement. Self-ID laws in other jurisdictions prove that the government has no justification in requiring further proof, and such requirements violate privacy.
Further, refusal to recognize nonbinary people denies recognition to both intersex and trans nonbinary people who wish to keep their "sex assigned at birth" private.
It is unfortunate that the UK Government refuses to fix these issues and will have to be forced to do so in the European Court of Human Rights.

I'm not going to rant about this at length, but I have never seen a tool that assesses fingerprintability of browsers which is not complete utter bullshit.
Fingerprint randomization makes you easier to track because it is detectable and rare.
None of these tools say what incremental identifying information an attribute provides given other attributes.
For example, on a mobile device, your screen resolution gives a pretty good idea of what device it is because there are rarely more than a few popular devices at any given time with a particular screen resolution, and especially on a given carrier.
If I know your IP address I can predict your time zone >95% of the time, and your language setting within a couple possibilities almost as often. If I know you're using Chrome/Firefox/Safari, you're almost certainly using a release less than two months old.
TLS fingerprinting has approximately zero privacy impact.
None of this is to say that I would be upset in the slightest if the advertising surveillance complex ceased to exist, but scaremongering kills credibility.

I was using an LLM at work on Friday (as my corporate overlords insist upon), and got a refusal to convert a charlie foxtrot of html into markdown because... copyright.
The irony nearly gave me an anyurism.
I pointed out that this was clearly fair use, but also, the source document was labeled CC-BY-SA.
Obviously it apologized, told me I was absolutely right, and did what I asked, but... wow.
