Two days ago I actually had the opportunity to present my Onward! essay.
The presentation consisted of a prerecorded video (which I think wasn't tragic) and a live Q&A session.
The first question was asked by Guy Steele, and I feel that I didn't deliver a satisfactory answer (it wasn't a hard question, and it wasn't unexpected either, so I could have prepared), and that's probably nothing, but I can't stop thinking that I could have answered it better.

I just learned that my Onward! essay, "Programs Should Be Comics, Their Execution -- Animation", has been published in the ACM Digital Library (Open Access):

Many thanks to everyone involved!

I recently managed to develop a fairly robust model for documents and editing operations in (literate) #GRASP.
I bet you've never seen the factorial function in #Scheme this tall

'deo' stands for 'deodorant'?

Actually 'Anthropic' here is a portmanteau of 'anthropos', which means 'human', and 'atrophy', which means 'decline'

I've been using Claude for over a month now (paid subscription), and I used it to build a fairly advanced website for a friend to run his photo studio, with a Kanban board, chat and notifications.
(Previously he used a work-flow based on Trello and Google Spreadsheets)
I can't say this is how I imagine a perfect development workflow, but I think it's a fairly good remedy to the way web development sucks in the today's world.
Previously I also used ChatGPT to vibe-code an appointment calendar app, and it generated a fairly good scaffolding, but I had to fix some stuff myself (because apparently it was losing context very easily, even though the entire thing was fairly small), but with Claude I had nothing to complain on so far.
(Plus the CLI integrates fairly nicely with my workflow)
I plan to give it a try with some more advanced tasks later on, but honestly I expect it to fail on most things that are non-standard.

Yesterday I went to visit my old Philosophy Department, and I saw this poster on one of the professor's doors (bearing the title "Mathematical Logic and Foundations 1847-1947" and crediting Joel Friedman as its author, and providing 1976 as the creation year), and I felt that I have to share it on Mastodon (if nothing else, then just for the sake of writing alt text ;D)
It's around 3MB, so sorry about that, but I didn't want it to reduce it to make sure the letters remain legible.
I also found this write-up about the poster: https://dailynous.com/2014/10/28/mathematical-logic-foundations-chart/

when I designed my own instruction set for a virtual machine, instructions were written as
destination := source1 operator source2
and so.
The fact that we have two competing operand orders is perfectly dumb.

do you have any specific pointers to Apple's C extension with higher-order functions?
(I know that GCC has an extension called "nested functions", but I couldn't find anything equivalent in clang)

the alternative I see is that they don't take help from their parents, thus pumping up the pockets of landlords and bankers?

I wonder if you pronounce code in your head as you read it
to me, figuring out arity is not a problem - but the lack of such hints obscures the roles of arguments, which I'd consider more problematic.
Consider
memcpy(a, b, c) // I didn't make it up!
vs
(copy-memory! #;to a #;from b #;of-size c)

I don't know if I understand you correctly, but a few years ago I wrote this (about my experience with Scheme programming):
