Maybe I missed something, but where did you get the idea that they can access your chat history? As far as I'm aware, everything's end-to-end encrypted, and unless you have the paid plan, it's not even saved on your device past seven days.
I've been using the free plan for the past couple months now and it has been a very solid option.
