Manga Creators Caught Possessing Child Pornography (all male of course). The author of Rurouni Kenshin comes to mind. And the author of a manga called Act Age was caught in appropriately touching underage girls
Nobuhiro Watsuki, creator of Rurouni Kenshin, was convicted in 2018 for possessing child pornography. He admitted to possessing approximately 100 DVDs featuring naked girls aged 15 or younger, stating a preference for girls in late elementary to junior high school. Despite facing up to one year in prison, Watsuki received a suspended sentence and a fine of 200,000 yen (approx. $1,900), allowing him to continue publishing his sequel, Rurouni Kenshin: The Hokkaido Arc, in Japan
Several male manga creators have been publicly charged or convicted for offenses involving child sexual exploitation, including possession of child pornography and inappropriate physical contact with minors. These cases have sparked significant debate within the anime and manga communities regarding the separation of art from the artist and the adequacy of legal consequences in Japan
Nobuhiro Watsuki (Rurouni Kenshin)
Nobuhiro Watsuki, the creator of the acclaimed samurai series Rurouni Kenshin, was arrested in November 2017 for the possession of child pornography. During the investigation, police discovered approximately 100 DVDs containing homemade recordings of nude minors, specifically girls aged 15 or younger, in his office. Watsuki admitted to the charges, stating to police that he "liked girls between the ages of upper elementary school students to about the second year of junior high" (roughly ages 10 to 14).
In February 2018, the Tokyo Summary Court found him guilty but sentenced him only to a fine of 200,000 yen (approximately $1,900 USD), avoiding any jail time despite laws allowing for up to one year of imprisonment. Following the scandal, his sequel series, Rurouni Kenshin: The Hokkaido Arc, was temporarily suspended but resumed publication in Japan roughly six months later. While the series continued in Japan, Viz Media ceased the English translation of the sequel arc, though they continued to distribute the original manga. Watsuki's case is often cited in discussions about lenient sentencing for high-profile creators in the Japanese entertainment industry.

Tatsuya Matsuki (Act-Age)
Tatsuya Matsuki (also known as Tatsuya Matsumoto), the creator of the popular manga Act-Age, was arrested in August 2020 for indecent acts against minors. Unlike Watsuki's possession charges, Matsuki was caught on security camera footage groping the breasts of a 14-year-old girl on a bicycle in Tokyo; he admitted to touching two different middle-school girls that day. He was indicted and subsequently found guilty of committing indecent acts with a minor.
In December 2020, the Tokyo District Court sentenced Matsuki to 18 months in prison, suspended for three to four years (reports vary on the probation period), meaning he served no immediate jail time. The consequences for his career were more immediate than Watsuki's; his publisher, Shueisha, canceled Act-Age immediately upon his arrest, and the series was never completed. However, reports emerging in 2026 revealed that Matsuki was hired by publisher Shogakukan in 2024 under the pseudonym "Yatsunami Miki" to work on a new manga, The Counselor through the Years and Stars, a decision made with the full knowledge of the editorial staff and artist involved.
