At NASA’s Johnson Space Center, Rice University intern Malvika Bhardwaj is developing analysis tools for the U.S. Deorbit Vehicle, which is intended to support the safe deorbiting of the International Space Station at the end of its operational life. Her work examines thruster firings and uses computer simulations to test the vehicle’s control system and identify conditions that could cause failures. NASA engineer Daniel Cohen mentors her and evaluates SpaceX’s design through multiple life-cycle reviews.

Bhardwaj also works with NASA’s guidance, navigation and control team, which studies how spacecraft determine their position and maneuver in orbit. Separately, Cohen analyzes Orion docking-camera settings that provide positioning measurements for future Artemis rendezvous activities. The report highlights the technical role of internships in ongoing human-spaceflight programs, rather than announcing a new mission or flight result.
