Groupon was one of the fastest-growing companies ever and had a blockbuster IPO.
The problem was that much of the growth didn’t create the value businesses expected. Groupon could flood a restaurant or store with bargain hunters, but too few became full-price repeat customers.
Eventually businesses figured out the customer-acquisition ROI wasn’t nearly as good as the growth implied.
