I am sure that he thought conversion was *relieving* and so of course he was sincere; he writes (as so many other converts) that he's grateful to feel like he's arrived at where he ought to be in all respects. But his writing is too much tinged with special pleading and hamfisted attempts to drive his point home for good and that smells of insecurity to me. He must have had second thoughts.
