Interesting. As you say, very common here. I can't imagine going back to not having a rotary clothesline. I still use an old "not a Hills Hoist" my father gave us 40y ago. It was old even then. Dad had bought a house, but he didn't want its clothesline. I'll look for branding later on.
It's pretty wonky, missing bits of line, doesn't go up or down anymore (probably just needs grease on the gears), but still works a treat. 🙂
