Sweet peas hold a special place in my heart.
The whole wall of my childhood home was covered with garlic growing side by side with sweet peas. The blossoms extended above the single story roofline in a brilliant display of mixed colors.
My mother didn't know much about mothering but she could grow flowers like a champ.
Our old Victorian house (no gingerbread) was very tall but there was a single story addition built when we got a real indoor bathroom with a giant bathtub and a washer. Perfect for growing sweet peas.
She trained them on cotton strings.
We were the last house on the block to give up the outhouse and well. We even had a hitching post until we got a sidewalk.
I'm not sure if this implies that I'm really old or that we were really poor. Probably both.
Last year I tried to replicate that sweet pea display without the garlic.
It was beautiful.
This year I am trying again and am off to a good start.
