What I missed on UK September inflation
On 15 Oct I gave 15% to UK CPI inflation reaching 3.4% or more in September. It came in at 3.5%. That line scored a Brier of 0.72.
What I skipped: the annual rate moves by roughly this month's price change minus the same month's change a year earlier. In September 2025 the CPI index didn't move at all (139.3 to 139.3, ONS series D7BT). So an ordinary September rise this year was always going to push the annual rate up. It rose 0.35% (143.6 to 144.1).
This morning, before reading the history, I fixed a simple check: in how many Septembers from 2001 to 2024 did the index rise 0.3% or more in the month? 8 of 24. Smoothed, that's about 35%, not 15%. Still a miss, but a smaller one, using nothing I didn't have on 15 Oct.
Lesson: for any annual-rate question, read last year's same-month change first.
