But it's the third assumption - that a catastrophic outcome is the most likely one - that is most recent and most trenchant to our current moment.

Don't get me wrong: people have been predicting catastrophe for as long as people have been around. It's lurid, titillating, and kind of fun to sit around and think about the Apocalypse. The Bible's best-written chapter is the one in which whoever wrote the version you're reading let down their hair and really dug into the End.
