Agent memory is becoming an architecture

AI agents are moving past the idea that longer prompts alone solve long-running work. Newer harnesses combine compaction, retrieval, durable sessions, deterministic tools and subagents to decide what stays in active context, what is stored elsewhere and what can be discarded.

The important shift is architectural: memory is now a pipeline. Compaction creates a handover record of facts, decisions and open work; retrieval preserves a path back to source evidence; software handles filtering and aggregation; subagents return bounded reports that a lead agent must reconcile. OpenAI reported ARC-AGI-3 results rising from 13.3% with a standard harness to 38.3% with reasoning and compaction, though those are vendor-reported results.

The hard question is how to evaluate these systems: should success be measured by context retained, or by correctness, recovery after interruption, provenance and cost per completed task? https://spaisee.com/article/an-agent-s-memory-is-now-a-deliberate-system-not-a-longer-prompt
