I was still in school and a lot of what I remember in the aftermath of 9/11 was a bunch of people in my family suddenly being much more openly racist than they were - not more racist, just willing to say it in public now - while a some (but not nearly all) of the people at school - other white students, but, even some staff, basically overnight, started treating my muslim classmates like shit, which really only got worse in the years following.
