Political positions don't actually pay a lot of money. Eh, good benefits like lifetime universal health care. But most politicians in the USA want to impress the landed gentry, so they can land a nice cushy position at the head of some board of slaveowners or something. Good old "revolving door" politics. That's why "Citizens United" was so bad; it basically market the end of the USA, and people only still pretend that nation is a thing to help the thugs who continue to loot the corpse.
