I don't know if he got into this mess as an image play, but I suspect he's bailing on it now because of how bad the numbers look on this. The left will complain no matter what he does, so you can take that out of the equation, but his base split on this, and the side that disapproves was pretty vocal. The Iraq playbook can't be run again, same with covid, once you run it once it loses its effect.
