Random thought on Monday morning, an hour and a half before sunrise.
Building decentralized systems is difficult: there are many technical problems to solve. It's also easy to end up with a de facto nearly centralized system for non-technical reasons. Git is d., but almost everyone uses it via GitHub. ATProto tries to be d., but it's difficult to run it without Bluesky. Matrix is d., but almost everyone uses matrix.org. Fediverse is d., but mastodon.social is so big it distorts the network.
