#Mastodon is replete with problems, including fundamental critical design flaws that may or may not ever be fixed. I spent more than a decade on Twitter. On Google+ I had something approaching 400K followers. I've been using social media since before the term "social media" was coined, going all the way back to the earliest ARPANET mailing lists, Usenet, and others. So I speak with at least a modicum of experience. And that experience tells me that Bluesky is falling into the same trap -- which is largely a function of the overall state of people's relationship to the Internet in the current regulatory environment -- which I assure you is in the process of becoming far more problematic than most people have any idea is coming, that Twitter fell into. The sad truth is that Twitter's quality decline was likely even if Musk had not purchased the platform. And Bluesky's design, being a close analogue to Twitter/X, makes it vulnerable to all of the same forces, which already appear to be spreading through the platform. This will take time of course, but will accelerate with the coming regulatory changes, including likely the decimation of Section 230. It's all too easy for users upset with mature platform A to be enthusiastic about newer platforms that still seem shiny and exciting. But look behind the facades, and the same fundamentals lurk in both X and Bluesky (and most other social media platforms that are fully or mostly centralized).
