My big issue with RHEL type distros for desktop/laptops is the lack of in-place upgrades. Desktops/laptops are almost always bare-metal installs and you often don't has physical space to put in a second storage drive (primarily laptops). Having to backup/restore all of your configuration just to do an upgrade seems a huge waste of time and resources. I'd rather upgrade in-place and figure out the few issues that don't upgrade nicely than having to do a backup and restore.
