I live in Bergen, Norway, and ever since I moved into my own apartment in October 2024, I’ve become increasingly aware of how little I’m exposed to advertising and propaganda. Being anti-TV and anti-radio has allowed me to distance myself from much of the constant messaging that seems to dominate modern life over here. Without these things playing in the background, I’ve come to appreciate the peace and quiet that comes with choosing what I allow into my mind.
As you could probably guess from how much I love spending time in nature and meditating, I’m drawn to a slower, more intentional way of living. I find comfort in silence, in being present, and in connecting with the world around me rather than constantly consuming information and entertainment. Nature and meditation offer me something that modern technology often seems to take away, the sense of stillness, clarity, and genuine connection with myself.
Sometimes, I genuinely struggle to understand how most people manage to keep up with all the noise of modern life. Between television, radio, advertisements, social media, and the endless stream of digital distractions, it feels as though there is very little room left for silence or independent thought. I find it exhausting just thinking about it.
Perhaps I’ve simply grown accustomed to a quieter existence, but I can’t help wondering why so many people accept this constant overstimulation as the new normal. Honestly, the whole thing makes me want to retreat even further into nature and enjoy the peace of being disconnected. Urgh.
