Y’all know I’m a connoisseur of American copaganda TV shows, which I mostly hate-watch because there’s something wrong with me. Weirdly, I had never seen the seminal series “Homicide: Life on the Street.” When it came out in the 90s I was workin’ the late shift at a bar so I missed it. Now I’m watchin’ it and boy-o, I’d forgotten how weirdly lo-tech the 90s were.

Cell phones, if anyone had one, were giant beige bricks. Computer monitors were giant beige CRTs (and there was only one in the squad room). The word “database” did not exist in common parlance. Nobody had heard of the World Wide Web. No “facial rec,” no CCTV in every shop, no Google, no social media beyond BBS. No wonder those Baltimore homicide guys hardly ever solved a murder.
