The opposition to phonics has always puzzled me. Is there really a secret society conspiracy to make the public illiterate? And if not, why did anyone oppose phonics?
The whole advantage of English over Chinese is that the alphabet represents the sounds in the spoken language. If you see a word you have only heard, you can probably make the sound and your auditory brain will recognize it.
Math, likewise, did not need changing. But phonics puzzles me.
