When Trump was elected in 2024, I felt like we had just witnessed the last free and fair election in the United States for a generation or more. It’s not that it will be impossible to defeat the fascists at the ballot box in 2026 or 2028, but the barriers to a democratic path out of fascism are going up fast. Voter disenfranchisement, intimidation, and outright fraud will mean that a slim majority can no longer succeed in unseating the fascist Republican regime: we will need an majority that is such a landslide that it punches through all attempts at disinformation and pseudo-legal tampering. The longer it takes, the greater the landslide must be.
Trump has fired all the commissioners of the bipartisan Elections Assistance Commission (EAC). The EAC was set up to after the 2000 election to chiefly to administer the HAVA funds. Today it publishes standards for voting equipment and a manages standard form people can send to their state for voter registration.
Trump previously ordered the EAC to add a "proof of citizenship" section to the voter registration form, and this move may be related to that.
