I'm coming around to policy that gitignore should default to everything and then we should manually whitelist the filepath patterns to include in repo (*.c; *.sh ...) because it does seem typically the opposite approach leads to more work over time and more stuff leaking into the repo that never should have, esp fat binaries and secrets
