I think you misinterpret. To me, the “Weird” arose from the parody nature of the lyrics with its antecedents in Mad Magazine, Doctor Demento, and Spike Jones.
I have a fuzzy recollection of Yankovic coming down from San Luis Obispo to Santa Barbara to be a guest of Greg Drust’s KCSB program right about the time he was breaking out. If Yankovic was ridiculing polka, hell would freeze over before polka expert Drust would have him on the program.
