Yesterday I tried to get ACARS messages through RTL-SDR. My antenna might not be ready for this. However, ADSB 1090 was well received! If you have an rtl-sdr laying around and want to try out yourself without wrestling on Linux and have a Chromium like browser, you can hookup your rtl-sdr through WebUSB and see airplanes flying around you:
