FIFA's Disciplinary Committee notified the Argentine Football Association (AFA) on Friday of a package of sanctions that includes suspensions for three players and assistant coach Roberto Ayala, as well as a total fine of US$321,000 for multiple infractions committed during the 2026 World Cup, including the display of a banner about the Falkland Islands.

The sanctions, detailed by CNN en Español and confirmed in the AFA's official statement, stem from the altercations that occurred after the final whistle of the World Cup, played on July 19 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, where Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 with a goal by Ferran Torres in the 106th minute of extra time.

The harshest punishment fell upon midfielder Leandro Paredes, suspended for 10 matches and fined US$90,000 after footage showed him grabbing Eric García by the neck and knocking Gavi to the ground during Spain's celebrations.

Defender Nahuel Molina received a seven-match suspension and a fine equivalent to US$90,000 for striking and verbally abusing Rodri. Thiago Almada was sanctioned with a one-match suspension and a US$30,000 fine.

Ayala, assistant to national team coach Lionel Scaloni, was suspended for three matches and fined US$30,000 after being caught on camera punching Dani Olmo in the face. On the Spanish side, Gavi received a one-match suspension with the national team, a sanction that does not affect his commitments with Barcelona.

FIFA also penalized the Argentine Football Association (AFA) for the display of a banner with the phrase "The Falklands are Argentine," unfurled by Argentine players after defeating England in the semifinal.

The world football governing body described it as "the use of a sporting event for unsporting demonstrations" and imposed a fine of US$10,000, plus an additional US$20,000 for inappropriate spectator conduct in the same case. The banner had prompted a formal protest from the UK government to FIFA.

These figures are in addition to US$100,000—with another US$100,000 suspended for six months—for racist, homophobic, and discriminatory chants by fans during matches against Cape Verde, Egypt, Switzerland, England, and Spain, and another US$91,000 for objects thrown onto the field, delays in the start of matches, and breaches of security protocols.

As an additional sanction, the AFA will have to play its next official home match with the stadium at 50% capacity, although it may substitute this by filling 25% of the capacity with community groups and anti-discrimination organizations, subject to FIFA approval. It will also have to invest the amount of the discrimination fine in a comprehensive plan against this scourge within the next six months.

The Argentine Football Association (AFA) announced that it will appeal the rulings. "The AFA's Legal Department will, in due course, request from FIFA the grounds for the reviewable decisions in order to file appeals with the Appeals Committee of the world football governing body, leaving the possibility of appealing to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) as a last resort," the official statement indicated.

Regarding compliance with the individual suspensions, the AFA specified that they must be deducted from the upcoming official matches of the men's national team, including international friendlies.
