Was at a reunion yesterday. One of my friends was bigging me up, encouraging me to tell ppl that I’m a professor, and to be proud of that. When I did, I was met with mostly concerns for my wellbeing, with ppl positing that academia in general and CS in particular is too misogynistic for me to thrive and be healthy. I’m now wondering if that’s in part why I always tell ppl about my job in such an apologetic way?
