Many years ago I read an article in Wired that profiled an Israeli engineer. His idea was to have batteries mounted on the underside of vehicles. You'd drive to a filling station and a machine would pull your battery out and put in a charged one. There was some way it worked out how much to charge you based on how much power was left in your removed battery and how much you were getting installed-- maybe how many cycles were left on your battery, too. I don't think it ever happened.
