One thing I don't think you get, and I'm not sure the US authorities explained it well, is the purpose of bending the curve.
If you don't keep your attack rate below your ability to treat the worst cases with high flow oxygen, you will needlessly lose a lot of people.
We saw that in India's one real wave, and I saw that in my corner of deep Red state America when Delta hit and there was not a free isolation bed to be found for 150 miles in all directions.

Nope, sorry, it was high as these things go, and there was the partly filled promise of vaccines to mitigate it (antibodies from B cells are not long lasting for any strain of coronavirus immunity with one possible exception, T cell immunity significantly decreased severity, those are what cause the poison ivy overreaction as I previously noted).
This included people who _didn't_ require hospitalization but who died at significantly greater rates in the next six months as found by a study of VA data 2020 patients, this group tending younger than the 30K hospitalized, who had outcomes three times as worse as those with the seasonal flu. See link for a start on that study.
There's an argument we should have discussed what to do, but in a radical democracy it was always going to come down to the older set, although serious risk stated in people in their thirties. Because the older one gets, the more likely they are to vote.
That's just an answer to part of your points, but we've got to agree on a base of facts or not discuss it. If needed, I can dig up more mortality rates, note they kept increasing with the Alpha and Delta variants which in 2021 sequentially better packed the virus's RNA payload _and_ broke multiple nation's containment strategies as they become dominant.
